The Dentist is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients in need of dental services. This includes managing oral diseases, injuries, and malformations of the teeth, gums, and related structures. The role also involves providing appropriate interventions, including the treatment of conditions affecting the nerves, pulp, and other dental tissues essential to tooth vitality. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

Below are the primary duties and essential functions of an employee in this position. While not all tasks may be performed by every employee in this role, all employees are expected to perform related tasks as needed. These essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation. 

  • Provide appropriate and optimal service to all patients.  
  • Record patient histories 
  • Perform examinations of teeth, gums and related tissues 
  • Order and interpret x-rays and other tests 
  • Assess and create patient-specific treatment plans 
  • Guide and support identified patients in managing their preventive dental care and chronic conditions.  
  • Ensure patients understanding of their condition, treatment, encountered results and commitment to their management plan. 
  • Track symptoms that are being followed, work ups underway, or high-risk areas of patient(s) family or medical history. 
  • Administer local anesthetics to limit the amount of discomfort experienced by patients during procedures. 
  • Diagnose oral diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments. 
  • Design, make, and fit prosthodontic appliances such as space maintainers, crowns, partial dentures, and dentures, and write fabrication instructions or prescriptions for dental technicians. 
  • ​​​Write prescriptions for antibiotics, analgesics and other medications. 
  • Perform extractions on teeth that are damaged or decayed 
  • Treat cavities by cleaning and filling decayed areas of teeth to restore their function 
  • Treat exposure of pulp by pulp capping, removal of pulp from pulp chamber, or non-surgical  root canal therapy. 
  • Produce and evaluate dental health educational materials. 
  • Plan, organize and maintain dental health programs. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Demonstrates commitment to and practices in line with Bowen Health’s core values of respect, integrity, mission and stewardship. 
  • Proficiency in diagnostic procedures, including initial and periodic oral examinations and pulp vitality tests. 
  • Experience in radiographic procedures, including intraoral, bitewing, and panoramic films. 
  • Experience in preventative procedures such as adult and pediatric prophylaxis, nutritional counseling for dental disease prevention, oral hygiene instructions and dental sealants 
  • Skilled in restorative procedures, fillings, root canals, and crowns. 
  • Proficiency in oral surgery procedures, including simple and surgical extractions. 
  • Ability to perform surgical incisions, including incision and drainage of abscesses. 
  • Experience in adjunctive general services, including anesthesia administration via regional block anesthesia or analgesia. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Education: Dental degree from a CODA accredited university 
  • Experience: Prefer at least one year of experience as a dentist in a clinical situation, or other accepted related experience as appropriate. Prior Federally Qualified Health Care (FQHC) experience is preferred. GPR or AEGD experience preferred.  
  • Certificate or Professional License: Maintains in satisfactory condition, licensure and continuing education as outlined by the Indiana State Dental Board (DDS/DMD). 
  • Satisfactory results from criminal and driving record background checks.
