Job Details:
Job Summary:The Legal Intern will assist all sections of the City Attorney’s Office and will perform a variety of tasks including research, writing, and attending legal proceedings. The work the Intern may encounter includes interpreting statutes and ordinances, employment law, litigation, criminal law, open meetings requirements, and public information requests.
This will be an in-person part-time (20 hours/week maximum) paid internship position. This internship is not offered for class credit.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS;
Provide assistance to the City Attorney’s Office in performing legal research and writing.
Locate, review and analyze applicable statutes and ordinances.
Assist in providing legal opinions to requesting departments.
Assist in preparing and revising legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, and contracts.
Assist in preparing litigation documents such as pleadings, discovery requests and responses, and deposition summaries.
Review and summarize a variety of municipal records.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
May also assist with Municipal Court dockets (if in possession of a 3rd year Bar Card [Supervised Practice Card].
Perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifying Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledgeable of the organizational structure of the City of Arlington and its leadership.
Skilled in performing legal research on a variety of platforms.
Ability to locate and analyze applicable statutes, policies, and rules.
Ability to effectively use technology, including but not limited to Microsoft applications.
Ability to summarize legal issues orally or in writing in a concise and professional manner - largely free of errors.
Ability to communicate comfortably with a wide variety of individuals.
Ability to be comfortable with sensitive or potentially sensitive information and exercise good judgment and discretion when discussing the information.
Ability to work in an office environment.
Ability to work Monday through Friday during standard business hours.
If in possession of a Texas 3rd Year Bar Card (Supervised Practice Card), must be in good standing with the Texas Bar.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have completed the first year of law school at an ABA-accredited law school.
