Acts as a resource to the Manager and colleagues by coordinating patient care activities and is subject matter expert in the department.Will provide clinical oversight and coordination for breastfeeding support services. Consultation, educational support and staff development activities that provide the bedside nurse with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to educate and support breastfeeding will be critical to the success of this position. In addition, the lactation consultant coordinator will provide consultative and educational services to mothers and their family members to assist them in optimal feeding
practices that support the growth and development of newborns and toddlers. Ultimate responsibility and accountability for day-to-day direct patient care will continue to rest on the individual nurse responsible for the patient, unit-based resource nurses and the Nurse Manager of each unit. The Lactation Consultant Coordinator will also serve as the coordinator of our Baby Friendly initiative. Is required to maintain an extensive and diverse knowledge base, flexibility in practice and the need to be adaptable to changes in technology, legislation and breastfeeding practices. Incorporates ethical and legal requirements in their professional practice as a member of the health care team.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
Education: Current IBCLC Certification or CLC plus actively working toward IBCLC.
Licensure: Indiana Nursing License, if also a RN.
Experience: Minimum of two years current clinical acute care setting. Experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining new programs/initiatives.
Other Job Requirements:
Demonstrate excellent skills in the area of interpersonal relations. This relationship includes the ability to coach other patient care personnel in the delivery of patient care. The approach to all customers must be sensitive and courteous, maintaining a professional, yet personable relationship.
Be able to follow proper channels of communication anticipating and consistently handling daily routine problems while recognizing complex issues that need referral.
