A DAY IN THE LIFE AS AN STORE MANAGER IN TRAINING

Under the general guidance of and through coaching from the assigned District Manager and the Retail Director, effectively and efficiently directs the operations of a multi-product retail store.   The Store Manager in Training ensures performance of all functions necessary to manage and operate a Goodwill store with emphasis placed on collection, processing and sale of donated and/or purchased goods.  

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A STORE MANAGER IN TRAINING

The successful candidate will have at least five (5) years of retail experience, with three (3) years' experience in management, supervising ten (10) or more employees. This person will also be dependable to work an assigned schedule rotation. (Store hours are Monday - Saturday 9AM- 8PM and Sundays 11AM - 7PM.) Since this is a working managers position, the ability to lift, push and pull heavy items is required. The store manager in training will also need to have a valid Arizona driver’s license with a suitable driving record, and be able to become CPR and First Aid Certified. Must be able to gain clearance under the Department of Economic Security to provide services to program participants of the Division of Developmental Disabilities (fingerprint and background check) within 90 days of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • * Demonstrate internal Company Values at all times.
  • On an on-going basis, identify areas of opportunity and seek guidance/coaching/instruction from direct supervisor to enhance learning in those areas.
  • Work closely with supervisor and/or Retail Director to learn and successfully demonstrate proficiency of all responsibilities.
  • Review monthly store revenue and expense; operate the store at or above goal.
  • * Ensure high standard of donor and customer relations through prompt, efficient, friendly, and courteous service by store staff. 
  • Ensure Mission fact of the week is communicated to donors.
  • Conduct “Managing by Walking Around” throughout entire day.
  • *Review Goals and Objectives (G&O’s) with each store employee on a monthly basis.
  • *Ensure timely processing of donations and properly completes the production records. Work closely with everyone to ensure donations reach the sales floor within 24 hours.
  • * Ensure store security (i.e. relating to theft, pilferage, handling of deposits, access to facilities, etc.) is maintained according to company policies and procedures.
  • * Prepare weekly store schedules, and daily “to do” lists or delegates the task to an appropriate team member. 
  • * Generate various data reports and handle all banking functions for store; make bank deposits, get change, etc.
  • * Promote on-going training through monthly store meetings and other appropriate means to ensure use of productive sales techniques, and to update store staff on internal policies and procedures.
  • * Stays abreast of product knowledge, industry trends, and competitive pricing through monthly comparative shopping of competitors (i.e. retail, consignment, and second-hand thrift), and review industry periodicals.
  • * Maintain store (inside and outside) in clean, safe and orderly manner to encourage sales, and provide a pleasant shopping and working environment.
  • * Ensure all equipment is available and in the system for use by the other stores.
  • Recommend materials, equipment and other supply purchases for the store within limits established by Goodwill policy.
  • Attend meetings and training activities as scheduled.
  • Inform employees of donor, production and sales goals and how to maximize each.
  • Evaluate productivity of all work performed.
  • Supervise all employees, creating a teamwork environment.
  • Maintain processing room and offices within Kaizen parameters.
  • Follow all company and department policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all safety rules are adhered; reports accidents or injuries

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operates cash register, receives donations from donors, and works in production, as needed. 
  • Actively promotes safety and loss prevention policies.
  • Completes accident/incident reports timely.
  • Handles internal and external inquiries regarding donation sites/policies.
  • Attends and participates in monthly meetings, as required.
