Science Lab Assistant - Work Study Opportunity
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Science Lab Assistant (SLA) provides hands-on experience in a teaching laboratory. The SLA will support laboratory operations, assist with experiments, and help maintain a safe and organized lab environment. This role is ideal for students interested in gaining laboratory experience to complement their academic coursework.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and clean laboratory equipment, glassware, and materials
- Unpack, label using the ROD system, and store new chemicals and supplies
- Maintain and update lab signage and documentation
- Assist with setting up and breaking down laboratory experiments
- Maintain laboratory safety and cleanliness according to CCV’s Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)
- Maintain sharps containers and prepare for disposal
- Maintain biohazard waste and prepare for disposal
- Coordinator projects with the regional Coordinator of Teaching and Learning and CCV’s Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO)
- Inventory and organize laboratory supplies
- Adhere to ethical guidelines and lab safety procedures
- Perform eye-station and shower monthly checks and complete corresponding documentation
- Perform end of semester safety check and complete corresponding documentation
- Assist in the science supply ordering process (e.g., double-checking that items on all spreadsheets are still available, have updated pricing, and item numbers)
- Participate in lab ordering processes on an as needed basis (e.g. review faculty lab order sheet, etc.)
- Attend training sessions as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a current matriculated student in a STEM or Health Science program
- Must have completed or concurrently enrolled in at least 12 credit hours of science coursework
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic understanding of scientific methods and laboratory practices
- Punctual, reliable, and professional in communication and conduct
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the semester, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate familiarity with standard lab procedures and equipment
- Apply basic data collection and analysis techniques
- Understand and follow lab safety protocols
- Communicate scientific observations effectively
- Contribute productively to a laboratory team environment
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision received from CCV Faculty or Office Manager
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Enrolled as a current CCV student
Compensation : $16.50 per hour (unless noted otherwise on contract)
