About the Department
Help shape safe, fun, and enriching before- and after-school experiences for Hampton’s youth. The Program Coordinator – School Age Programs leads the daily operations of multiple School Age Program (SAP) sites in partnership with Hampton City Schools. This role oversees staff, activities, and program quality to ensure children and families receive high-quality educational and recreational experiences.
In this role, you will:
- Lead and supervise staff teams delivering educational, enrichment, athletic, and recreational activities at multiple school sites.
- Plan, coordinate, and manage program schedules and special events, including working with vendors and community partners.
- Support behavior management by meeting with parents/guardians to address inappropriate behavior or disciplinary concerns.
Facilitate team meetings and staff training to build skills, improve performance, and support professional growth.
Market SAP programs through outreach, social media, and community presentations to increase awareness and participation.
Conduct regular site visits to monitor operations, staff performance, and adherence to policies, safety standards, and program expectations.
Assess facility and program needs, maximize use of available resources, and develop partnerships with schools and community organizations.
Assist the Program Manager with administrative tasks such as budgeting, expenditure tracking, data collection, and supply purchasing.
Recruit, interview, hire, train, and evaluate staff; provide ongoing coaching and participate in performance and disciplinary decisions as needed.
Serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) in the absence of the Program Manager when assigned and perform related duties as required.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in the related field.
- Three (3) years in child development, education, and recreational youth services.
- A minimum of (1) year of supervisory experience is required.
- Any acceptable combination of experience and education, which qualifies the applicant for this particular position, may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above.
- Must possess a current American Red Cross First Aid Certificate, CPR certificate, and certification by the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification within 6 months of employment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license issued have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
- Must successfully pass a Child Protective Services Check and background checks related to the class.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- May be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or must possess a Commercial Driver's License instruction permit and obtain the CDL within 90 days of employment.

- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergencies, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
