About the Department
As a Solid Waste Heavy Equipment Mechanic Foreman, you will play a critical leadership role in keeping essential equipment safe, reliable, and operational for daily services. This position combines hands-on technical expertise with supervisory responsibility, ensuring both quality workmanship and adherence to safety standards. The ideal candidate will bring proven mechanical knowledge, strong organizational skills, and the ability to guide a skilled team in maintaining the equipment that supports community operations.
Position Duties
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots malfunctions in vehicles and heavy equipment, performing or overseeing complex repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, PTOs, and electrical systems. Rebuilds and installs engines and components, machines drums and rotors as needed, and utilizes shop equipment, diagnostic tools, and precision instruments to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Assigns, directs, supervises, and participates in the activities of semi-skilled and skilled equipment mechanics, monitoring workflow and ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and standards. Assists with recruitment, scheduling, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary recommendations, while also preparing and submitting required personnel and operational reports.
- Conducts quality control inspections of repaired equipment to verify safe operation and regulatory compliance. Develops and enforces in-house safety rules, while providing ongoing training to staff on proper shop practices and safety procedures.
- Manages parts and materials by submitting requisitions, maintaining inventory, and ensuring proper accountability. Prepares and maintains accurate work records, including work orders, time estimates, and cost-tracking reports, to support efficient maintenance and repair operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Must possess a master mechanics tool set.
Other Qualifications
Knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, including the mechanical components common to automotive and related equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and shop practices related to equipment repair and maintenance operations.
Knowledge of principles of organization, administration, and supervision as applied to shop operations.
Skilled in the use, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials required for the repair of heavy equipment, vehicles, and related machinery.
Ability to exercise analytical judgment in diagnosing and detecting malfunctions in mechanical equipment.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to assign, direct, and supervise semi-skilled and skilled mechanics in repair and maintenance tasks.
Ability to perform manual labor associated with mechanical repair work while maintaining effective working relationships with staff and stakeholders.
Ability to interpret and apply safety and health procedures to ensure compliance in work processes.
Ability to develop and implement in-house safety rules to promote employee awareness and safe work practices.
Ability to train subordinates in proper safety methods and preventive practices.
Conditions of Employment:
Must obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License, including Hazmat Endorsement, within six (6) months of employment
Must obtain Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE) certification in brake systems and preventive maintenance inspections and CFC recovery certification within one year of hire.
Must meet industrial physical examinations such as sight, hearing, cardiovascular, pulmonary, chest x-rays, blood pressure, blood sugar and lead levels; chemistry profiles such as cholesterol and liver functioning, etc., after employment as a condition of continued employment.
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
