Position Title: Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering
Compensation: $75,936
Location: Saint Martin’s University
The Civil Engineering Department at Saint Martin’s University invites applications for an Assistant Professor. This is a tenure-track position. The expected start date is August 2026.
Candidates must have a commitment to teaching excellence and student engagement. A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Engineering Education, or Environmental Engineering is preferred for this position. Candidates should have a background in water, environmental engineering, or geotechnical engineering.
The Civil Engineering department’s mission is to prepare students for a challenging and fulfilling professional career, while building community within the student body and amongst the faculty and staff. Small class sizes enable active mentorship between faculty and students. Faculty are encouraged to focus on creating opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, engage in hands-on experiences, and actively engage and network with practitioners. The ideal candidate will contribute to course offerings and support and contribute to the established community engagement model.
The Civil Engineering program is ABET EAC accredited. The program includes an undergraduate track (Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering), and two tracks to graduate programs (Master of Science in Civil Engineering and Master of Science in Environmental Engineering). Primary Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Teach standard teaching load of 9 credits per semester.
- Teach sophomore-level general engineering courses such as statics, dynamics, or mechanics of materials.
- Teach junior-level, water-related engineering courses and labs including fluid mechanics (and lab), hydraulics engineering, and water resources engineering.
- Open to teach junior-level geotechnical courses and labs.
- Open to teach graduate-level water/ environmental engineering electives and undergraduate general engineering courses
- Engage in departmental assessment of student outcomes
- Engage in scholarly work within their area of expertise
- Engage in service to the university community
- Advise and support student-led clubs related to engineering
Qualifications/Requirement
- A Ph.D. in either Civil Engineering, Environmental, or Engineering Education is preferred
- A Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET-accredited civil engineering program
- Demonstrated passion for teaching and mentoring students
- Eligibility to work in the United States from the start date of the appointment
- Support the Saint Martin’s Catholic, Benedictine liberal arts tradition
Preferred:
- Experience in teaching undergraduate level courses in water-related infrastructure
- Professional engineering licensure
- Interest in directing graduate program in Environmental Engineering
