About the Position:

The CAAS Payroll Specialist will manage and advise on payroll operations for multiple clients, providing specialized consulting and compliance support. The ideal candidate will be a Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or have extensive, hands-on experience with multi-state payroll, construction prevailing wage compliance, and payroll-related due diligence for private equity or M&A transactions. 

This position requires advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency, deep payroll tax knowledge, and the ability to handle diverse client engagements in a fast-paced, advisory-focused environment. A background in HR—particularly in benefits administration and compliance—is preferred. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and process accurate, timely payrolls for multiple clients across various states and industries. 
  • Serve as a payroll consultant and advisor, assisting clients with technical payroll and compliance matters. 
  • Respond to and resolve IRS or state payroll tax notices, including direct correspondence with taxing authorities. 
  • Handle multi-state payroll tax compliance, including withholding and unemployment taxes, particularly for construction clients or remote workforces crossing state lines. 
  • Provide guidance on prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting for construction clients. 
  • Advise clients on specialized payroll and tax issues such as: 
    • Per diem rules under GSA guidelines for construction and field employees 
    • Nonqualified Deferred Compensation (NQDC) taxation and reporting 
    • Taxable fringe benefits (Circular 15-B compliance) 
  • Support payroll-related due diligence for private equity and M&A engagements, including analysis of wage/hour compliance, employee classification, and benefit structures. 
  • Collaborate with CAAS, tax, and advisory staff to provide integrated, client-focused service. 
  • Conduct payroll reconciliations, manage year-end filings (W-2, 1099), and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. 
  • Maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication, confidentiality, and responsiveness. 

Qualifications:

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation or minimum 5+ years of experience managing complex payrolls. 
  • Extensive experience in multi-state payroll tax compliance and reporting. 
  • Deep understanding of construction payroll, prevailing wage, and certified payroll reporting. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills  
  • Experience managing multiple clients simultaneously in a consulting, accounting, or professional services environment. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Proficiency with leading payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Paylocity, Gusto, QuickBooks Payroll, etc.). 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • HR experience with benefits administration, compliance, or employee relations. 
  • Prior experience with payroll due diligence in M&A or private equity transactions. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, or related field. 
  • Familiarity with ERP systems or accounting software integrations.
