TxDOT's Beaumont District is looking for a Transportation Engineer Tech I or II to join us in our District Design Office, located in Beaumont, Texas. As a Transportation Engineer Tech, you will be a part of our design team working on our district's projects. This position requires a strong mathematic background, some engineering drafting skills, and being a trusted and reliable team player when it comes to getting the job done. Transportation Engineer Tech I: A16 $50,000 - $61,130
Transportation Engineer Tech II: A18 $50,000 - $71,055

Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Engineer Tech I:
- Performs basic design work.
- Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
- Prepares field notes.
- Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
- Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
- Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
- Works on reproduction of plans.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer Tech II:
The above and:
- Assists in on-the-job training of the less experienced technicians.
- Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
- Reviews entire set of plans for format, drafting, and calclation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
Transportation Engineer Tech I: No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Engineer Tech II: 2 years drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Competencies:
Transportation Engineer Tech I:
- Basic roadway design
- Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.
- Higher mathematics

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Sedentary work: Lift up to 10lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work sitr to another
Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers
