At the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), we’re looking for a motivated professional to join our Grand Region team as an assistant construction engineer. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of challenging and meaningful construction and infrastructure projects that improve safety, mobility and quality of life for communities across west Michigan.
In this role, you’ll be able to blend technical design, project coordination and in-the-field construction observations to support successful project delivery from planning through completion. You’ll gain experience with complex transportation projects while contributing to engineering solutions that help keep people and goods moving safely and efficiently.

This position provides a balance of office-based engineering tasks and fieldwork, offering continuous opportunities to learn, solve problems and contribute to public-facing outcomes that make a difference for the region and the state.
As the next assistant construction engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Assisting the region construction engineer with quality assurance for the region's state and local construction operations.
- Monitoring delivery of the program, providing leadership and expertise in solving complex issues, and implementing improved processes.
- Ensuring alignment with region and statewide policies and guidelines. This duty requires possession of a valid driver’s license to perform field visits and conduct Work Zone Safety and Mobility (WZSM) reviews.
- Working with the region construction engineer as the region’s construction liaison responsible for coordinating and collaborating on state and local construction and construction contract issues and topics with each region Transportation Service Center (TSC), other TSCs across the state, the Lansing central office, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and other construction, construction engineering and material stakeholders. You will also help build, strengthen and maintain positive relations with these groups.
- Assisting the engineer of record in the administration of construction engineering and consultant construction engineering contracts.

Position Duties
Education
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
ExperienceThree years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11.
Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Engineer 9 - 12
Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.
