Craig M. Cogut Visiting Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies 2026-2027 presso Brown University

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) is inviting applications for its Craig M. Cogut Visiting Professorship in Latin American and Caribbean Studies to be taken up during the 2026-2027 academic year.

The Craig M. Cogut Visiting Professorship brings leading scholars from Latin America and the Caribbean to Brown University to teach and conduct research in a wide variety of fields. Visiting Professors are appointed through the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at the Watson School for International and Public Affairs. Cogut Visiting Professors (CVPs) meet regularly with undergraduate and graduate students; give presentations on campus through CLACS or affiliated units; and teach one undergraduate course on Latin America and/or the Caribbean per semester OR participate fully as a co-teacher in an already existent course at Brown. The Craig M. Cogut Visiting Professorship provides a salary, an optional medical insurance package, a modest research fund, and administrative assistance. Appointments are made for one or two semesters depending on the scholar’s availability, the contribution of courses to the curriculum, and the availability of funds. 

The fellowship is open to any scholar working on Latin America and the Caribbean. Next year, we are especially interested in candidates whose work aligns with several thematic lines, including conservation and climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean; cultural, artistic, and literary production in the Americas; and democracy and governance. 

Preference will be given to individuals working in Latin America or the Caribbean, but we will also consider U.S.-based applicants. Academic applicants must hold a Ph.D. in any discipline of the humanities or social sciences, and must be at least five years out from the awarding of the doctoral degree. In exceptional circumstances, we may consider applicants with professional qualifications and extensive experience in academia, the arts, and the public service. For this position, Brown offers only the J-1 visa classification to scholars who need immigration sponsorship in order to enter the U.S. and commence lawful employment under the terms of their appointment. 

Applications should include: (1) a cover letter describing your research, teaching, accomplishments, and proposed length of stay (one or two semesters; if one semester, please indicate your preferred semester). Candidates should address how they would contribute to the research and/or teaching missions of our diverse and inclusive university community; (2) a current C.V.; (3) a list of up to three professional references, including, if applicable, a professional contact at Brown University who is familiar with your work and/or with whom you may wish to collaborate or co-teach a course; and (4) a one-page description of the proposed course or courses that you would like to teach as a Visiting Professor (may be taught in English, Spanish or Portuguese) OR a suggestion of a faculty colleague at Brown with whom you would like to co-teach a course (and the specific contributions you would make to such a course).
