Job Description:
The Director of Global Transportation & Logistics Programs is a leadership role focused on the strategic
design and development of all aspects of transportation and logistics for Ocean State Job Lot (OSJL). This
position leverages expertise in Operations & Supply Chain Leadership and Change Management to define
global standards, drive programmatic improvements, and manage significant financial outcomes. The
Director reports to the Sr. Director of Transportation and Logistics and is accountable for optimizing the
movement of goods, particularly focusing on inbound and international freight control and ensuring the
successful deployment and integration of key technology systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Program Management
● Develop and execute comprehensive global transportation, logistics, and network infrastructure strategies,
formulating related policies and programs to optimize service and ensure alignment with OSJL’s strategic
objectives.
● Serve as a Change Management Leader by developing, standardizing, and implementing cross-functional
processes and programs to support global operations.
● Lead high-impact, cross-functional projects in supply chain network design and transportation
optimization, identifying global and regional trends to create continuous program improvements.
● Routinely present to the executive leadership team to provide strategic feedback, identify blockers, and
articulate opportunities related to key initiatives.
Global & Inbound Logistics
● Lead the end-to-end inbound transportation program (including international, maritime, and domestic) to
maximize freight control, drive significant volume growth, and optimize the use of fleet capacity, outside
carriers, and brokers.
● Direct and optimize all inbound transportation operations, managing contracts and nurturing key
relationships with containerized ocean carriers, drayage providers, and other partners to achieve financial
and operational goals.
● In close coordination with Imports and DC teams, ensure the effective use of technology to manage
drayage operations, coordinate receiving appointments, and aggressively monitor and reduce port-related
charges, including demurrage and detention.
Technology & Systems Optimization
● Drive supply chain productivity by leading the advanced optimization of the company's transportation
technology stack, ensuring seamless, high-performance integration between the Transportation
Management System (TMS), Warehouse Management System (WMS), Oracle, and other core systems.
● Act as the business owner for key TMS optimization initiatives (e.g., Yard Management integration,
Global Product Integration) and manage cross-functional requirements for all critical technology projects.
● Oversee the strategic management and maintenance of all transportation-related software and hardware
(e.g., MATM, Trimble, OBCs, trailer tracking) to ensure data integrity and operational synergy.
Performance, Analytics & Continuous Improvement
● Establish, monitor, and report on scalable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for all transportation and
logistics functions, developing analytics to measure key metrics, drive results, and support performance
reviews.
● Oversee the analysis of driver performance, fleet optimization, and carrier utilization, translating data into
actionable strategies for cost reduction and efficiency gains.
● Develop and track continuous improvement targets for the department, ensuring all processes are
documented and opportunities for enhancement are identified and implemented.
Financial Management & Cost Control
● Demonstrate mastery in financial management, including the development and review of the annual
transportation budget, tracking department expenses, and ensuring budget accountability.
● Develop and socialize KPIs that are applicable to operational and financial execution
● Define and manage hybrid cost allocation models and refine the system for reconciling Estimated Landed
Cost (ELC) vs. Actual Landed Cost (ALC).
● Oversee the management and refinement of a systemic freight auditing process within the TMS to
automatically verify invoices, control costs, and ensure contract compliance.
● Align the strategic procurement of all transportation-related goods and services and oversee financial
tracking of fleet assets, fuel, and mileage.
Team Leadership & Stakeholder Partnership
● Define and build a lean, efficient organization, leveraging proven skills in hiring, training, mentoring, and
managing global teams, including direct and indirect reports.
● Partner closely with internal stakeholders (Buyers, Imports, DC leadership, Stores, Replenishment) and
external partners (vendors, carriers, 3PLs) to optimize the end-to-end flow of product and enhance
visibility.
● Build and maintain strategic, growth-focused relationships across all contacts, from day-to-day managers
to the C-Suite.
● Direct a team that supports the management of all inbound operations that includes domestic
and international processes.
● Provide leadership and direction to the domestic inbound team ensuring that inbound purchase
orders are planned and executed on-time, and within established cost parameters.
● Align with supply chain partners to utilize forecast data and product launch details to level the
flow of inbound goods to reduce bottlenecks
● Establish clear and concise process support and guidance to the buying team to incorporate
logistics feedback and end-to-end consideration when negotiating and planning inbound.
Compliance, Safety & Asset Management
● Ensure all transportation operations maintain compliance with Company policies and all applicable state,
federal, and DOT regulations.
● Oversee all department compliance and reporting, including driver qualification files (drug screening,
MVRs, medical reviews), asset registrations, and required tax reports.
● Champion a culture of safety, working with Safety leadership to implement and administer all company
safety and accident reporting policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
● Experience: 10 or more years of increasing responsibility in transportation, logistics, and supply
chain is required. Demonstrated experience as a Global Head, General Manager, or Director
managing strategic programs and large financial portfolios is strongly preferred.
● Supervisory Experience: 5 or more years of supervisory experience managing multi-level or
global teams is required.
● Required Skills: Demonstrated success with financial management, planning, and organizing, and
negotiations. Proven expertise in Logistics and Transportation, Project Management, and Change
Management.
Work Environment:
● Works primarily in a climate controlled environment with minimal safety and health hazard
potential.
● Works in an office environment remaining stationary at a desk, table, or computer workstation for
extended periods of time. Frequently uses near vision for reading and computer tasks.
● This position also requires working in an active transportation yard with regular exposure to
outdoor weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, and airborne particles. The noise
level in this environment is typically moderate.
