A Day in the Life
This role serves as a member of the Global Controllership team, which is responsible for systems, processes, and procedures associated with preparation of financial statements and supporting a strong internal control environment.
As an External Reporting Team Senior Manager, you will work on challenging initiatives, gain exposure to senior levels of the organization, and have a significant impact on Global Controllership achieving its future-state vision.
This position reports to the Sr. Director of External Reporting and will provide leadership, help manage effective utilization of resources, and enhance team capabilities to enable and facilitate successful execution of External Reporting initiatives including preparation of Medtronic plc’s SEC filings including the annual 10-K and quarterly 10-Q filings, benefit and retirement plans, Disclosure Committee and Audit Committee materials, and annual Irish Statutory Accounts. This position is actively involved in helping drive the implementation of new or modified policies, procedures, and processes, and will actively participate in managing and leading financial analysis, decision support on complex technical accounting reporting disclosure matters, and other special projects.
The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with technical accounting and reporting experience enhanced by strong organizational and facilitation skills. To be successful, you must work well in a matrixed environment, build and nurture business partnering relationships with key stakeholders, and be able to communicate clearly and collaborate deeply across the entire organization.
This position will provide a wide array of responsibilities and leadership experiences and will require the ability to influence and partner with a multitude of organizations and levels (including senior level executives) within Global Finance, Investor Relations, Legal, Public Relations, Treasury, Tax, Compensation & Benefits, Sustainability, and Medtronic’s portfolios, operating units, and regions.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
Help lead and manage the External Reporting Team’s preparation of and perform detailed review of the annual 10-K and quarterly 10-Q filings including financial statements, MD&A, footnote disclosures, and supporting schedules, to ensure compliance with SEC reporting requirements. Lead and manage annual Irish Statutory Accounts reporting requirements. Accomplish results through effectively leading matrixed work teams, including significant collaboration with Investor Relations. Ensure high quality work is achieved while meeting necessary deadlines.
Lead and review the External Reporting Team’s preparation of the financial statements for the benefit and retirement plans, including 401(k) plan 11-Ks.
Manage various Special Projects for Global Controllership. Special Projects include a multitude of analysis, reporting, benchmarking, and ad hoc requests that require the ability to obtain necessary information from internal and external sources and prepare and present comprehensive, cohesive, and understandable presentations.
Help lead daily/weekly/monthly task visualization and prioritization and provide team coaching necessary to ensure successful development and execution of external reporting initiatives. Use influence, knowledge, and experience to drive problem solving and issue resolution.
Actively participate in the monitoring, development, training, and implementation guidance to portfolios/areas/functional business partners on proper application of U.S. GAAP reporting and disclosure matters.
Maintain a high level of understanding of current and proposed/pending accounting and reporting requirements that may impact Medtronic through self-study, outside/web-based seminars, and active participation in professional organizations and personal networks.
Act as a primary liaison between Medtronic and the external auditors (PwC) for quarterly review and annual audit procedures and special projects.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of relevant experience (or advanced degree with 5+ years) plus 5+ years of managerial experience
Nice to Have
8+ years of business experience with emphasis in accounting or finance including 6+ years of public accounting/SEC Reporting experience
Strong ability to translate complex technical reporting guidance and effectively document and operationally implement it within an organization
Sound understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), financial controls, and other authoritative accounting and reporting guidance
Active CPA
Big 4 experience and/or SEC external reporting experience
Skillful in data analysis and visualization
Must have a high degree of initiative and self-motivation
Strong analytical skills and exceptional attention to detail
Strong organization skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities while consistently delivering on time/high quality results
Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with and influence all levels of management and executive management
Experience in large, matrix-managed company
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications (Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and desire and ability to learn financial applications (Workiva Wdesk, SAP, OneStream)
Strong people management skills, effective prioritization and delegation, and leadership ability including high focus on maintaining organization culture that fosters strong teamwork
