About the Role:
The Behavioral Health Technician plays a critical role in supporting the mental health and well-being of patients within a behavioral health care setting. This position involves direct patient care, assisting with clinical assessments, and implementing individualized treatment plans under the supervision of licensed clinicians. The technician is responsible for monitoring patient behavior, managing crisis situations effectively, and ensuring a safe therapeutic environment. Accurate clinical documentation and maintaining comprehensive records are essential to support continuity of care and discharge planning. Ultimately, the role contributes to improving patient outcomes by providing compassionate, skilled support to individuals experiencing serious emotional disturbances (SED) and other mental health challenges.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Experience or training in behavioral health, mental health, or related clinical settings.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and mental health care principles.
- Ability to maintain detailed and accurate clinical documentation.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and clinical staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as a Behavioral Health Technician or equivalent credential.
- Experience working with pediatric or adolescent populations with serious emotional disturbances (SED).
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems used in behavioral health settings.
- Training in trauma-informed care and de-escalation strategies.
- Additional coursework or certification in clinical assessments or discharge planning.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct care and support to patients with mental health needs, including those with serious emotional disturbances (SED).
- Assist clinicians in conducting clinical assessments and implementing individualized treatment and discharge plans.
- Monitor patient behavior continuously and intervene promptly during crisis situations to ensure safety and de-escalation.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, including progress notes, incident reports, and care plans.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support patient care goals and participate in team meetings and case reviews.
Skills:
The required skills such as clinical documentation and maintaining documentation are essential for ensuring accurate patient records and supporting clinical decision-making. Crisis management and crisis intervention skills are applied daily to respond effectively to emergency situations, ensuring patient and staff safety. Clinical assessments and mental health knowledge enable the technician to assist in evaluating patient needs and progress, contributing to individualized care plans. Skills in discharge planning help facilitate smooth transitions for patients leaving care, promoting continuity and recovery.
