THE DEPARTMENT
The City of Visalia's Public Works Department serves the Public and other City Departments by providing Solid Waste and Recycling Services, Streets Maintenance, Traffic Maintenance, Fleet Management, Water Collection and Treatment, as well as Conservation efforts. With over 150 employees, the Public Works Department is one of the largest departments within the City. Each Division is responsible for the development and implementation of services provided to or for the Public. The Division’s staff is committed to customer service, safety, and providing high-quality services to other City Departments and the Public.
Position Duties
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, the Lead Equipment Mechanic provides advanced technical expertise and lead supervision over equipment maintenance personnel within the Fleet Division of the Public Works Department. This position performs complex diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on a wide variety of City vehicles and equipment, including both gas and diesel-powered systems. Responsibilities include scheduling and assigning work, ensuring compliance with safety and inspection standards, assisting with parts procurement and recordkeeping, and supporting the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor with operational oversight. The Lead Equipment Mechanic is expected to demonstrate a high level of mechanical proficiency, exercise independent judgment, train and evaluate staff, and maintain effective communication with City departments regarding equipment status and repair needs.
Minimum Qualifications
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be highly skilled and experienced mechanic with strong leadership and diagnostic abilities, capable of performing and overseeing complex maintenance and repair work on a variety of City fleet vehicles and equipment. They demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and a commitment to safety and efficiency in all aspects of fleet operations. The ideal candidate will also be proficient with computer programs, including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word. They will work well with other staff members, are open to suggestions, and thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:
- Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment
- Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment with emphasis on either heavy equipment or automotive/light equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Commercial Driver's License, Class B with airbrake endorsements, by time of appointment.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Positions in this class require moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting, and carrying loads weighing between 50 to 95 pounds.
