YOUTH COUNSELOR

A typical day in the life of a Youth Counselor at HopeWest looks like painting pottery, befriending beanie babies, and utilizing the gentle power of horses to help children and teens navigate one of life's most naturally painful experiences: grief. Using expressive arts, play, and equine therapies, youth counselors facilitate school groups, individual sessions, and summer camps with a highly passionate and tight-knit team of counselors. This position offers a wonderfully balanced blend of flexible work and scheduling hours, in-office and out-of-office time, and fun utilization of evidenced-based counseling techniques, which makes this more than just a job. SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Youth Counselor provides counseling, education, and support to bereaved clients you are coping with serious illness and/or death of a loved one through phone calls, counseling sessions, and group support. This position provides school-based grief groups, individual and/or family counseling and serves as a resource on psychosocial issues related to child grief and loss internally and externally which includes educational presentations. The youth counselor will also assist with planning and facilitating the child and teen grief summer camps.
COMPETENCIES & REQUIREMENTS:
- Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office word processing and excel spreadsheets and functional ability in PowerPoint and Outlook Calendar.
- Communicates effectively with others, particularly with those experiencing difficult situations.
- Speaking in front of a group.
- Facilitation of groups of individuals and or teams.
- Time management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in a counseling field and/or social work is required.
- Must hold and maintain an active, independent, unrestricted license, such Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Marriage/Family Therapist (LMFT) with the State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) prior to first day of work if not already obtained at time of job offer.
- At least one (1) year of experience in counseling and grief work.
- At least one (1) year of experience working with children and teens in a related setting.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license and unlimited access to reliable transportation.
- Adequate automobile insurance.
- Able to work in a variety of environments.
Pay and Benefits:
- Hourly pay: $35.00 - 39.00
