About the Department
Position Duties
Support Kitsap Transit’s goal of providing safe, secure, reliable, regulatory-compliant, and environmentally responsible ferry services.
Perform regular inspections and cleaning of vessel engineering spaces, void spaces, and equipment consistent with sound marine practices.
Conduct routine checks of marine system levels and conditions, such as operating fluids, hydraulics, coolants, lubricants, batteries, lighting, and similar systems.
Assist Marine Mechanic II staff in maintaining vessels and marine systems, performing light- to medium-duty repairs including:
Maintaining machinery and machinery spaces in safe, orderly, and compliant condition.
Performing preventive maintenance on propulsion and auxiliary systems such as diesel engines, water-jets, generators, HVAC, plumbing, and marine electronics.
Conducting planned and ad hoc repairs of propulsion engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, and related equipment.
Support vessel inspections and checks of operating and safety equipment to ensure safe and reliable ferry operations.
As directed, sail aboard vessels to assist with maintenance activities.
Pick up vessel parts and supplies from area vendors as needed.
Assist with inventory control, recordkeeping, and documentation of maintenance and repair work consistent with manufacturer life-cycle servicing requirements.
Properly use personal protective equipment in potentially loud or hazardous environments.
Minimum Qualifications
Kitsap Transit employees who wish to apply must have a satisfactory performance and attendance record. Kitsap Transit Operators with any of the following criteria in the last twelve months are excluded from recruitment opportunities:
- a current Decision-Making Leave or higher in the Safety category
- more than two held customer complaints
- more than four unscheduled absences
- more than two late reports
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED.
At least three (3) months of experience in the upkeep, servicing, or repair of vessels, marine engines, and related marine equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Basic safe working practices
Upkeep and cleaning of engineering spaces and equipment
Skill in:
Using tools and standard marine maintenance and repair techniques
Basic computer literacy
Recordkeeping
Ability to:
Work within an electronic preventative maintenance program
Interact courteously and professionally with staff and passengers
Work independently or as part of a team
Follow oral and written instructions
Commitment to:
Exceptional customer service and safe vessel operations
Safe work practices, including the proper use of tools and personal protective equipment
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
Valid Driver’s License
Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by TSA within 30 days of hire
Desired:
Certification as a Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED)

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position involves regular exposure to marine environments, loud noise, and mechanical equipment. Work may occur outdoors or in confined spaces aboard vessels and requires the use of safety and protective gear.
This position may be scheduled to work outside the typical workweek, required to work overtime, or asked to work outside normal/scheduled business hours to provide hands-on support.
