Job Title: EGSD School Bus Mechanic (Repair Technician)

Job Summary:
The School Bus Mechanic is responsible for skilled maintenance and repair of all school
busses and school district fleet vehicles, ensuring they are safe and operational for
student transportation. This involves diagnosing and fixing issues with engines, brakes,
electrical systems, and other mechanical components through both preventative
maintenance and reactive repairs. Key responsibilities also include performing safety
checks, keeping detailed maintenance records, and ensuring adherence to all local,
state, and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) safety and inspection
regulations.  Be prepared to respond to emergency situations during outside hours in
order to ensure student safety
Hourly Rate: $31.80-$39.10

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
? Diagnosis and Repair:
o Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic defects on
school buses and other fleet vehicles (cars, vans, trucks, equipment).
o Perform major and minor repairs on gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions,
brake systems (air and hydraulic), steering, suspensions, and drive trains.
o Troubleshoot and repair complex electrical and electronic systems, including
lighting, charging, starting, surveillance systems, and specialized equipment like
wheelchair lifts.
? Preventive Maintenance and Inspections:
o Execute a comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) program according to
established schedules and procedures.
o Conduct thorough safety inspections and annual certifications as required by
state and federal regulations (e.g., DOT and CDE)
o Perform oil changes, tune-ups, lubrication, fluid checks, and tire maintenance
(changing, balancing, and repair).
? Record Keeping and Inventory:
o Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance and repair work
performed, parts used, and inspection results using computerized maintenance
management systems (CMMS) or paper records.
o Assist with inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and stocking
parts and supplies.

? Shop Operations and Safety:
o Ensure the maintenance shop and all equipment are kept clean, orderly, and in
safe working condition.
o Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the proper handling and
disposal of hazardous materials.
o Operate service trucks and respond to emergency road calls to perform repairs
or assist with disabled vehicles.
o Order parts and maintain inventory
? Communication and Teamwork:
o Communicate effectively with transportation staff, including bus drivers, to
understand reported issues and convey repair status.
o Attend required training and professional development to stay current with
evolving vehicle technology and regulatory changes.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
? High school diploma or GED.
? Minimum of 3 years of experience in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, preferably
school buses or commercial fleet vehicles or completion of a vocational and or
completion of postsecondary education in automotive or diesel technology.
? Proven knowledge of both gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair.
? Proficiency in diagnosing issues using hand tools, power tools, and computerized
diagnostic equipment.

Preferred:
? Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, state-specific school bus inspection
requirements, and safety standards.
? Basic knowledge of CDE regulations and EGSD district policy

Licenses and Certifications (Required or Preferred):

? Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)
endorsements and Air Brake Endorsement. (can be obtained within 3 months of
start of employment)
Licenses and Certifications (Required or Preferred) cont.:
? Air Brake Certification.
? CDE Annual Inspector (Preferred or will need to obtained within the first year of
employment)

Skills and Competencies:
? Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, state-specific school bus inspection
requirements, and safety standards.
? Good communication and interpersonal skills, especially in coordination with
Transportation staff.
? Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
? Basic computer skills for record-keeping and diagnostic software.
? Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
? Strong work ethic and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
? Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
? Attention to detail in both maintenance tasks and athletic event preparation.
? Flexibility to work evenings or weekends during athletic seasons or events as
needed.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
? Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, and crawl for extended periods.
? Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly,
and up to 75 pounds occasionally.

? Work is primarily performed in a maintenance shop environment, which may
involve exposure to noise, fumes, odors, chemicals, vibrations, and weather
changes.
? Must be available for after-hours or on-call emergency service as needed.
