Primary Objective of Position:
The Mechanical Design Supervisor leads the mechanical design and drafting teams responsible for delivering high-quality, manufacturable product designs for large electric machines. This role focuses on execution, team leadership, and continuous improvement of mechanical design quality and efficiency, ensuring that projects are delivered accurately, on time, and in alignment with company and customer requirements. Position works closely with the Electrical Engineering Supervisor and R&D Supervisor to maintain standardization across disciplines and to implement new tools, standards, and design methods developed through R&D.
Major Areas of Accountability:
- Supervises and mentors Mechanical Engineers and Design Drafters, ensuring balanced workloads and adherence to project schedules.
- Sets clear goals and performance expectations for the mechanical design team.
- Fosters a collaborative, accountable, and learning-oriented team culture.
- Supports professional development and cross-training in mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes.
- Oversees design and analysis of mechanical components and systems for motors and generators across all product lines.
- Ensures all mechanical designs meet customer specifications, safety standards, and internal design criteria.
- Reviews and approves calculations, drawings, and models for accuracy, completeness, and manufacturability.
- Collaborates with Manufacturing, Quality, and Service teams to resolve design and production issues.
- Drives adherence to design documentation, revision control, and ISO 9001 requirements.
- Maintains and applies mechanical design standards, specifications, and templates.
- Partners with the R&D Supervisor to implement new engineering tools and standard methods developed through R&D initiatives.
- Ensures consistency between U.S. and global engineering design standards.
- Participates in joint design reviews with the Electrical Engineering and R&D teams to ensure integrated design solutions.
- Plans and assigns design work according to team capacity, skillsets, and project priorities.
- Tracks engineering output, performance metrics, and on-time delivery.
- Provides feedback to the Engineering Manager on workload forecasting, capacity needs, and skill development requirements.
- Supports process improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, communication, and quality control.
- Domestic and international travel up to 10�15%.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Bachelor�s degree in Mechanical Engineering required; Master�s degree preferred.
- 4�6 years of experience in mechanical design within engineered-to-order manufacturing (motors, generators, heavy equipment, or related).
- Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring engineers and/or design drafters.
- Strong background in machine design, manufacturability, and product documentation.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, quality, electrical, R&D).
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and PDM/PLM systems.
- Solid foundation in structural, thermal, and vibration analysis.
- Understanding of mechanical tolerancing, fits, and materials for heavy industrial applications.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) and related simulation tools preferred.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 documentation, revision control, and engineering release processes.

Physical Requirements:
- Physical ability to travel freely within manufacturing and office facilities. This requires climbing stairs and moving over, around, and about shop machinery.
- Have the physical ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds unassisted.

Salary:
$90k to $110k annually
