THE POSITION

Under the general direction of an assigned supervisor, the Field Mechanic performs journeyman-level mechanic work including repairs, adjustments, service, and maintenance to landfill heavy equipment, including, but not limited to dozers, back-hoe, compactor, water trucks, graders, scrapers, loaders, and refuse trucks. This position is primarily stationed at the Santa Maria Regional Landfill and may be assigned to work on other City vehicles as needed. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification, but may act as a lead worker for temporarily assigned employees or special projects. 

The Field Mechanic position is an Individual Contributor role that provides high-quality service to internal customers to ensure their vehicles and equipment are functional and operating safely. Their role enables repair and maintenance of City-owned fleet assets in compliance with manufacturer recommendations and Fleet Services procedures and protocols.


IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of increasingly responsible experience performing skilled mechanical work on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, including both light-duty and heavy-duty units. They should possess thorough knowledge of diagnostic methods, preventive maintenance, and repair techniques for engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical components. A valid Commercial Driver’s License is highly desirable, as the position may involve operating or testing heavy equipment and large vehicles. The ideal candidate takes pride in delivering high-quality workmanship, works well independently or as part of a team, and demonstrates a strong commitment to safety, reliability, and efficient fleet operations.

Full Job Description: Field Mechanic

Position Duties

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization.  

This position:
  • Inspects, overhauls, repairs and makes adjustments on engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors and various types of pumps on assigned City equipment and vehicles. 
  • Assists with maintenance of refuse collection bins and containers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as oil and filter changes, lubrication, hydraulic fluid reservoir checks and filter changes and inspects for wear on diesel motors, transmissions, and differentials on heavy construction equipment, refuse collection equipment, and other City equipment.
  • Checks various gear boxes and fills as required, cleans batteries and cables, checks for leaks in coolant, oil, air, lube oils and hydraulic fluid, and for wear and cracks on frames and rails.
  • Removes and replaces minor and major components on construction equipment such as water pumps, hydraulic pumps, intake and exhaust manifolds, cylinder heads, final drive and planetary gears, pinion seals, and compactor wheel cleats and rebuilds pumps and hydraulic systems on heavy equipment.
  • Performs metal fabrication with welding tools and makes repairs on frames, belly pans, carrier roller pads, cab repairs, and blade screens, and makes adjustments to rollers, sprockets, tracks, brakes, belts, hydraulic linkage, throttle and selector levels, and blade control cables on construction equipment.
  • Fills out electronic work orders in the fleet management system to account for all labor, parts, and materials used. 
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the department director. 
  • Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ideally, any combination equivalent to a vocational training program in automotive service and repair and three years of journey-level experience in the mechanical repair of automotive and heavy and light power-driven equipment; and 
  • Graduation from high school.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Experience in maintenance and repair to heavy construction equipment is desired.
  • Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as: 
    • Maintenance repair work on heavy equipment.
    • Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the over­haul, repair, and adjustment of motor equipment.
    • Fuel, ignition, electrical, and cooling systems.
    • Brakes (air and hydraulic systems) and of their repair and adjustment.
    • Hydraulic systems in heavy equipment. 
    • Operation and care of internal combustion engines, chassis, and related parts and replacements.
    • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent). 
    • Use computer and other office equipment effectively. 
  • Desired licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment.
    • A valid commercial driver's license is highly desired.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and meet City liability requirements to drive for City business.  
  • Requires completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
  • The incumbent must meet the physical requirements of the job class and have mobility, balance, coordination, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
