Description

This position is responsible for the leadership and management of the Maine Bodily Injury Claims Unit, overseeing the investigation and settlement of first and third-party claims arising from Personal Auto, Homeowner and Business Owner Policies.  Primary responsibilities include leadership, development and oversight of the unit including personnel resources, business processes and associated technologies, external vendor and agency relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Be a visible and communicative leader that demonstrates commitment and promotion of company adopted Core Values

  • Lead a team of claims professionals by guiding, monitoring, and facilitating the achievement of key performance objectives

  • Develop less experienced associates to meet current and emerging technical needs

  • Coordinate/supervise assignments, coverage analysis, reserve accuracy, effectiveness of negotiation, and resolution of claims

  • Identify areas of improvement for internal workflow efficiency to maintain service standards

  • Through regular supervision, file reviews and empowering employees, ensure claims meet company claim handling, reserve and litigation management guidelines and otherwise comply with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Manage Loss Adjustment Expenses in accordance with company guidelines

  • Excellent understanding of Section 111 Reporting Requirements and Medicare claim handling procedures

  • Ensure appropriate workload balancing between and among teams and teammates. If required, assist in the adjustment of claims that are referred for supervisory action

  • Maintain strong vendor, agency, and policyholder relationships

  • Review employment applications, resumes and interview candidates

  • Conduct employee performance evaluations; mentor and facilitate the career development of team members

  • Maintain a collaborative and positive environment including recognition, reward, constructive feedback, and team meetings

  • Identify individual behavior/performance issues, provide feedback, establish corrective action or performance improvement plans, and maintain documentation

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • 5+ years of experience in casualty and general liability claims handling required

  • 2 years of supervisory experience preferred

  • Multi-line adjuster’s license as required in our operating territories

  • Commercial claim handling, commercial coverage analysis and litigation management experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of policy contracts, insurance laws, regulations, and the legal environment in which we operate

  • Utilization of Automated Claims Management System and various manuals/software resources (QuickEstimate, HiMarley, etc.)

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient in PC Windows environment

  • Organization and communication skills

  • Understanding of claims handling and customer service

  • Project management skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet firm deadlines

  • Ability to work extra hours when workload requires

  • Ability to meet continuing education requirements for licensing purposes
