This recruitment aims to fill a Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) position with an anticipated end date of up to three (3) years. If the position is filled by a King County employee who has successfully completed their initial probation, they will be offered the role as a Special Duty Assignment.

About The Role:
The primary function of the Custodian is to maintain the cleanliness of interiors and exteriors of various office and public facilities at the public facing Environmental Education Center as well as supporting the custodian at the Brightwater Treatment Plant. The Education Center is sustainably built and features classrooms, meeting rooms, a banquet hall, and staff office. The work environment is dynamic and lively and is best suited for someone who enjoys being around people of all ages and working within a team environment. The Brightwater Treatment Plant is an award-winning industrial wastewater treatment facility with locker rooms, kitchens, restrooms, office spaces, and common spaces that are maintained by the custodial staff. This is a great opportunity for an individual who likes a variety of work and working with a diverse team. The successful applicant will work to help the Wastewater Treatment Division maintain a healthy environment for personnel of King County as well as maintain a welcoming public facing site for visitors.

About The Team:

Brightwater is part of King County’s regional wastewater system and serves parts of north King County and south Snohomish County. The plant is located just north of Woodinville and is King County’s newest regional wastewater treatment facility. It features an educational and event centernatural areas and hiking trails, and public art. The facility is nationally recognized for its award-winning design and its consistent compliance with state and federal discharge limits.


The Brightwater Center strives to engage communities and address the needs of priority communities that they identify for themselves in support of the Division’s mission to protect public health and water quality. Our group focuses on equity and social justice and makes this a priority in all our work. 


The Brightwater Plant has approximately 70 employees who operate and maintain the plant. The plant also serves as a worksite for contraction management personnel and administrative staff. It has a diverse workforce dedicated to supporting the mission of the Wastewater Treatment Division by safely operating and maintaining the facility to comply with environmental regulations.

Position Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Strip, wax and scrub various types of floors; vacuum and extract dirt from carpets and machine-buff floors.

  • Clean, stock and sanitize restrooms, kitchens, and public spaces including tables, chairs, toilets, showers, sinks and walls.

  • As directed, mix and use cleaning solutions and chemicals.

  • Dust, wash and vacuum surfaces.

  • Request and stock various types of supplies.

  • Empty trash.

  • Monitor and report any building, equipment, or safety issues to staff.

  • Support grounds maintenance including litter pickup and occasional outdoor tasks.

  • Follow established safety protocols and contribute to a culture of health and safety.

  • Clean glass windows and surfaces

  • May research and prepare bid specifications for cleaning equipment and supplies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Knowledge of basic janitorial cleaning techniques.

  • Knowledge in the use and care of cleaning equipment.

  • Knowledge of basic safety rules and procedures to ensure the safety of yourself and co-workers.

  • Knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals.

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to demonstrate behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.

  • Ability to work effectively with others in a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued.

Required Licenses
  • Washington State Driver’s License.

It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:
  • One (1) or more years of recent professional industrial cleaning/janitorial work experience


Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds, twisting, climbing, and bending on a daily basis.

Workplace Exposure:
  • Working in a wastewater treatment environment with exposure to some wastewater pathogens, and contaminates.

  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week.  This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. 
  • Union RepresentationThis position is represented by S.E.I.U. L925 (Wastewater Treatment Division).
