About the Department

Catawba County Facilities is recruiting an experienced and skilled HVAC Technician to join our Maintenance team. In this role, you will ensure all County buildings maintain safe, comfortable, and reliable heating and cooling systems for employees and the public. This position is responsible for servicing, repairing, and troubleshooting HVAC systems and building controls across multiple facilities, and plays a key role in maintaining operational continuity and high-quality environments.


This position works Monday-Friday, 8 AM–5 PM and is required to be on-call for after-hours service needs.

Position Duties

  • Perform routine HVAC service, maintenance, and preventative care
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC equipment and building control issues
  • Repair HVAC control systems and related components
  • Install, replace, or support major HVAC system repairs in coordination with contractors
  • Work with Purchasing to obtain quotes for contracted HVAC replacements or major repairs
  • Perform general electrical and plumbing tasks
  • Utilize refrigeration gauges, amp meters, hand tools, and testing equipment
  • Maintain accurate work orders, documentation, and equipment records
  • Assist with snow removal and seasonal operational tasks as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, HVAC one-year certification program from an accredited technical school, and 2 years of HVAC/maintenance experience; OR
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and 3 years of HVAC/maintenance experience

Other Qualifications

  • Valid NC driver's license with a safe driving record (Driving is an essential function of this position)
  • Strong understanding of refrigeration circuits and system performance
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems and controls
  • Ability to troubleshoot HVAC and building controls
  • General plumbing and computer skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond to emergency service requests
  • Ability to use tools such as amp meters, refrigerant gauges, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • This is considered Very Heavy Work, lifting in excess of 100 pounds occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds more frequently.
