Fitness Instructor Job Description

Fitness Instructors bring this to life by leading engaging and encouraging group fitness classes that support the community in their climbing journey.
The How:
As a Fitness Instructor, you are passionate about fitness and health and motivating others. You know the importance of building community and cultivate an encouraging class environment. You apply your fitness experience and expertise to develop and deliver engaging classes and support the participants’ growth. As a Fitness Instructor, you are organized, reliable, and consistently demonstrate professionalism.
The What:
Fitness Instructors are responsible for planning and leading engaging group fitness classes that support the Mesa Rim Climbing Community.
- Develop curricula and lead engaging fitness classes that support climbing training
- Ensure equipment levels meet program needs and inform supervisor of any shortfalls
- Motivate participants and encourage progress
- Provide information about complementary or related Mesa Rim programs and resources (climbing, yoga, private instruction, pro-shop gear, setting info, youth programs, Climbing Training Center, etc.)
- Demonstrate professional behavior and excellent customer service at all times, paying special attention to being on time and prepared for all classes
- Support development of the department by initiating new projects, proposing feasibility, and presenting to supervisor
- Serve as Mesa Rim cultural example, consistently demonstrating and holding others accountable to Mesa Rim Core Values
- Consistently promote safety within classes
- Demonstrate correct usage of fitness equipment, provide alternatives for varying fitness levels, and monitor misuse
- Inspect fitness area, clear area of hazards, and inform supervisor of any recurring hazards
Other work-related duties as assigned
Hours vary and minimums may be required according to the needs of business operations at each location
Must-Haves:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be a compatible match with the Mesa Rim Climbing Center culture
- Must have ability to seek and accept, as well as give, critical feedback in a professional manner
- Must demonstrate a positive attitude and be a team player
- Must have a drive to grow professionally
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification required
- Must have working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, and training principles
- Must have at least one year climbing experience
- Must have excellent customer service skills and ability to motivate others
- Must be able to independently problem solve using sound judgment
- Must demonstrate professionalism
- Must be able to work in an organized and transparent manner
- Must pass criminal and sex offender background check if working with youth
Nice-to-Haves:
- Group Fitness or Personal Training Certification (ACE, AFAA, or equivalent) strongly preferred
- At least one year experience teaching group fitness classes strongly preferred
- Yoga practice experience preferred

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employee must be physically fit and have the endurance to complete workouts led.

San Diego Fitness Instructor Pay Range $30 - $58.50 / hour
