SUMMARY 

Contributes to Columbus Humane’s mission and vision by serving as the law enforcement agent responsible for investigating complaints of animal cruelty and neglect and enforcing section 959 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC). The Humane Agent represents Columbus Humane animal cruelty cases and serves as the liaison with various city, county and other legal entities. Attends to court related duties and maintains a professional relationship with the prosecutor's office and the probations office. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Thinks, communicates and acts in the best interest of Columbus Humane and our human and animal clients at all times; models our mission and values in all job-related functions. 
  • Investigates complaints of animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment within Franklin County. Enforces section 959 of the Ohio Revised Code. Conducts investigations in the field and works in partnership with other law enforcement agencies as requested. 
  • Ensures the successful prosecution of animal cruelty offenders, including detailed and thorough documentation and preparation of cases, preparing statements and reports, writing and executing search warrants, and testifying in court.
  • Records accurate animal and case-related information into the PetPoint shelter management software. Works in partnership with the Animal Care staff and Adoptions staff to communicate information about animals brought into the shelter by the department and provides background information (behavioral, medical, etc.) as needed.
  • Partners extensively with the Veterinary Services department to collect evidence as well as ensure health and safety for animals served. 
  • Serves as an educator to the public in the field and promotes healthy, successful pet guardianship in compliance with ORC.
  • Keeps the Chief Humane Agent current with all investigations and case-related activity. 
  • Participates in emergency animal rescue situations as requested by Chief Humane Agent.
  • Maintains professional demeanor during encounters with the general public.
  • Conducts or participates in educational programs for the general public, Columbus Humane volunteers and staff, and training programs for cooperating organizations.
  • Ensures the safe handling and use of CID equipment and supplies including laptop computers, radios, and uniforms, etc. Responsible for disease control and cleanliness of Columbus Humane vehicles as well as periodic maintenance.
  • Attends education courses related to animal cruelty investigations and stays current on animal cruelty law. Keeps current on issues concerning animal behavior and public relations/interpersonal skills. Must take required State Humane Agent Training and pass examination.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, knowledge of and experience working with animals preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in customer service, including computer skills and the ability to learn software systems.
  • Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License and have insurable driving record.
  • Passionate belief in Columbus Humane’s vison, mission and values. 
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations. 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS  

At times required to lift up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT  

Work is performed in a normal shelter setting including exposure to hazardous chemicals and potential of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals.
