Assists in application of principles, methods, engineering fundamentals and techniques of civil and highway design engineering technology by translating and recommending designs, supervising drafting projects and providing technical support, all which must meet Federal Highway Standards.
Job Duties:
Designs and produces construction design plans for roads and bridges using engineering and architectural software. Designs horizontal and vertical alignments including super elevations to ensure proper sight and stopping distance using complex mathematical computations. Designs of signing for speed limits, sight distance, schools, curves and other pertinent conditions to ensure a safe driving environment. Downloads and translates aerial data to produce accurate topographic models to be used in the road design. Downloads and translates raw data into a usable format to use with the aerial data information. Gives detailed information to assist surveyors in the field, works closely with surveyors to obtain all necessary data. Checks for accuracy and edits as required. Reviews and conducts field inspections during design phase to assure accuracy of topography and to associate computer design to actual field conditions. Assists engineers to ensure that construction of the road meets current standards and specifications as called for in the construction plans. Calculates borrow pit quantities using engineering software. Designs Title, Summary, Typical Section, and other various detailed sheets and assembles with the appropriate standards into one package to ensure a full scope of the assigned project. Produces hydraulic design for all channels, ditches, cross drains, side drains, storm drains, storm sewers, inlets and bridges utilizing hydrologic and hydraulic methods set forth by the Department of Transportation to convey proper drainage. Ensures environmental issues are addressed concerning endangered species, archaeological findings and wetlands preservation. Determines right of way needed for the project, works closely with the right of way section in reviewing legal descriptions and then entering property data into plans. Calculates all pay quantities and creates various spreadsheets in Excel. Creates pay quantity sheets with general construction notes, erosion control and erosion pay quantity notes and pay quantity notes. Submits completed set of construction plans and specifications for approval and 2nd level review. Provides technical design support and information as needed or required. Maintains required records and reports. Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory responsibility.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
Bachelor's degree from 4-year college or university in Civil Engineering or Engineering Design; or six years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
An additional three (3) years of experience in a related field.
COMPUTER SKILLS
An individual should have knowledge of Design software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be proficient in most engineering software such as AutoCAD or Eagle Point, design, hydraulic modeling, interfacing word processing software, also with standard drafting and engineering equipment. Must have advanced mathematical skills and general knowledge of construction and surveying methods.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
