PROGRAM GOALS

The Village Clerk Internship provides an opportunity for hands-on experience in government, communications and public information, while learning about the vital role that municipal clerks play in serving their communities. The intern will gain valuable insight into local government operations and develop practical skills across multiple communications disciplines.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Communications or a related field
  • Strong interest in local government and public service
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with database systems, social media applications and graphic design software
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional setting


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend regular Council meetings and workshops (evenings); creating and publishing agendas and minutes
  • Facilitate public record requests to ensure government transparency
  • Manage records for the entire village
  • Review Legislative affairs and monitor state-level policy impacts on village operations
  • Review Code and charter codification
  • Manage Village Website and digital infrastructure
  • Manage projects to include Residents Academy, Florida City Government Week, Teacher Supply Drive, Pie-it-Forward, Christmas Toy Drive, Hurricane Relief efforts
  • Brand facilitation
  • Create and publish engaging social media content, video shorts, and reels
  • Assist the Communications Specialist developing a podcast program from the ground up
  • Assist in creating marketing and video shorts during the Resident Academy sessions to use for program marketing
  • Assist in creating a formal Youth Academy
  • Use AI and other software programs (ai) to auto capture internal and external processes such as how-to videos and business processes
  • Perform other related duties and assumes other responsibilities as necessary or as delegated.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a Village Clerk’s Office
  • Gain experience in municipal records management and public meeting administration
  • Gain a well-rounded education about legislative affairs and municipal government operations from attendance at Council Meetings and Workshops
  • Develop and/or hone skills in communications, social media management, graphic design and video content creation
  • Learn how to interpret and apply open records and open meetings laws
  • Develop professional administrative and communication skills applicable to government service

  • Professional office setting with occasional attendance at public meetings and community events
  • Flexible schedule depending on academic commitments
