This is a 188 day position; 7.5 hours per day

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Pennsylvania Certification as a School Nurse.
  1. Holds a valid and current state license to practice as a registered nurse in Pennsylvania 
  1. Two years experience in nursing. 
  1. Current CPR and First Aide certification. 
  1. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. 

 

REPORTS TO:    Principal, unless other specific direction is given.

 

 

JOB GOAL:         The school nurse’s primary goal is to strengthen the educational process through the improvement and protection of the health status of children in the schools of the district and to comply with Pennsylvania School Code mandates.

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Consults with school administrators to establish, review, and revise policy and procedures for a comprehensive school health program. 
  1. Collects information about the health and development status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner. 
  1. Assists in interpreting the social, emotional, and physical health needs of the child to parents and school personnel. 
  1. Provides current information for use by school personnel on such subjects as physical and psychological growth and development of the child, first aid practice, accident prevention, communicable disease regulations. 
  1. Identifies students at-risk for physical and psychosocial problems and communicates health needs to other school personnel. 
  1. Participates as a team member in the formulation of overall goals, plans, and decisions for students with special needs. 
  1. Participates in planning for community health services designed to augment and support the school health program. 
  1. Promotes self care and wellness values and attitudes in students by providing health counseling/instruction to parents, pupils and school/staff. 
  1. Participates in monitoring students’ treatment progress relevant to school performance. 
  1. Assesses immunization status of students to assure that every student’s immunization status is in compliance with the law and recommended medical practice. 
  1. Administers medication to students during school hours in accordance with established procedures. 
  1. Monitors therapeutic treatments and medication administration by students who are capable of self-administration. 
  1. Performs therapeutic treatments for students during school hours when ordered in writing by a physician at the written request of the student’s parent or guardian. 
  1. Advises other school personnel who may be responsible for performing medically ordered therapeutic treatments in accordance with established procedures. 
  1. Plans for and administers first aid to students and school employees. Advises other personnel who may be responsible for giving first aid in accordance with first aid procedures. 
  1. Conducts yearly weight and height assessment of students. 
  1. Schedules physical examinations; assist at examinations; arranges for special tests, examinations, follow-up care. 
  1. Performs tuberculosis testing according to regulations of the Pennsylvania Department of Health. 
  1. Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation. 
  1. Conducts mandated vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening. 
  1. Maintains comprehensive health records for each child. 
  1. Plans with school administrative, maintenance and sanitation personnel for the environmental needs of the school group. 
  1. Maintains records of school nursing services. 
  1. Implements the school policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases. 
  1. Provides pupil, parent, and teacher instructions on health exams and health programs conducted in the school. 
  1. Periodically evaluates health services and develops changes when indicated. 
  1. Uses community resources for referral of students and their families to improve current health status when their health needs are not met. 
  1. Participates in in-service and staff development programs. 
  1. Acts as a resource person in health education to school personnel. 
  1. Advises the school administrator in preparing a budget for the health program. 
  1. Makes student home visits when necessary. 
  1. Participates in the Student Assistance Program after formal training where board approved programs are established. 
  1. Cooperates with the dental hygienist in implementing the district dental health program. 
  1. Performs screening for lice. 
  1. Transports students home, to the hospital, or to a clinic in an emergency when parent or parent-provided transportation is not available and with the permission of the parent or guardian if possible. 
  1. Such other reasonable duties as are assigned by the School Board or Superintendent for the general well being of the student.
