About the Department

Work in servicing all types of light and heavy duty equipment.

Position Duties

·         Changes and repairs tires, replaces batteries, and fuels all types of light and heavy equipment 

·         Performs brake jobs on light vehicles, performs minor tune-ups; repairs or replaces exhaust systems   

·         Changes oil and lubricates equipment 

·         Assists in skilled mechanical work 

·         Makes routine inspections of light and heavy equipment and malfunctions in lighting systems, defective brakes, and broken glass 

·         Enforces safety standards and/or safe operating procedures 

·         Operates wrecker truck and tow in inoperative vehicles 

·         Responds to City accidents, cleans street of broken glass, and tows in damaged vehicles 

·         Picks-up and delivers parts and supplies 

·         Performs related work as required   

Minimum Qualifications


·         Two (2) years full-time experience in the servicing of automotive equipment

·         One (1) or more ASE certifications or certifications in automotive mechanics from accredited schools may substitute for up to one (1) year experience (500 classroom hours = one year of experience)

·         Driver’s license

·         Obtain a Class “A” Florida Commercial Driver’s License, valid for air brakes, with endorsements N and P, within 90 days of appointment

·         Shift work including nights, weekends and holidays

·         Supply own tools


Physical Requirements

·        Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact   

·        Continuous standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, and kneeling

·        Some crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling  

·        Heavy/strenuous lifting
