PG 10, $19.33 Hourly, Nonexempt

Saddle Creek Park, 3716 Morgan Combee Road, Lakeland FL, 33801

Monday - Friday, 7:00AM - 3:30PM (will vary per needs of the work unit)

MAJOR FUNCTION

Skilled technical work involving the performance of a variety of building construction trade work, including, but not limited to:  Welding (acetylene or electric arc welding) and general maintenance, repair and construction tasks for park facilities and grounds. 

Skilled work in the inspection, maintenance, repair and installation of playground structures and elements, safety surfaces, facilities and related equipment; documents safety inspections on all new and existing playground structures and related amenities. 

Semi-skilled work involving a variety of building construction trade work.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Preheats and cleans metals. 

  • Lays out, cuts and fits materials for welding. 

  • Responsible for selecting proper welding heat and for selection of the proper type and size of electrodes for correct penetration and strength of welding metals.

  • Does cutting and welding on such items of machinery and equipment as athletic field bleachers, playground equipment when requested, pump and engine parts, trailer parts, heavy construction equipment and similar machinery and apparatus.

  • Assembles and repairs bleachers and all types of playground equipment.

  • Participates in the manufacture of special machinery and apparatus as required.

  • Does flat, vertical and horizontal welding.

     

  • Drives truck and tows portable welder and acetylene burning welding equipment to various construction project sites.

     

  • Perform periodic inspection of Division playgrounds, including play elements and safety surfaces, for safety and preventative maintenance conditions and orders repair materials to take corrective and proactive action.

     

  • Identify hazards on public playground equipment and the playground.

      

  • Rank hazards according to injury potential. 

     

  • Apply knowledge to remove the hazards and establish a system of inspections. Maintain records for all inspections.

     

  • Assemble and repair bleachers and all type of playground equipment, including, but not limited to, picnic tables, benches and trash receptacles.

      

  • Maintain records for all inspections.

     

  • Operates a forklift.

     

  • Performs general carpentry work.

     

  • Operates a variety of power tools, including but not limited to, circular saws, drills, nailers, and routers.

     

  • Forms, pours and finishes concrete.

     

  • Prepares surfaces for repainting.

      

  • Selects, mixes and applies paints, enamels, varnishes, lacquers and waterproofing to various fixtures and equipment.

     

  • Estimates and installs fencing including but not limited to split rail, PVC and chain link materials.

     

  • Performs other related duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Knowledge of:

 

  • Practices, materials, methods and tools of the welding trade.  

  • Properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals encountered in welding work. 

  • Standard practices of surface preparation, selection and application of paints, enamels, varnishes, lacquers, waterproofing for aesthetic and corrosion prevention purposes.

  • Occupational hazards, safety procedures and safety precautions of the work.

 

Ability to:

 

  • Follow and complete oral and written instructions.

  • Read simple sketches and diagrams and to work from broken parts.

  • Wear and use routine safety equipment (i.e.: vehicle safety belt, safety glasses, hard hats, etc.)

  • Use and care for tools and equipment common to the welding trade.

  • Use a personal computer.

  • Use tools and equipment common to the carpentry trade.

  • Perform a variety of manual work in all weather conditions.

  • Bend, stoop, sit, stand, crouch and kneel.

  • Lift, push and/or pull materials that may weigh fifty (50) pounds.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a welder. 

  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license. 

  • Must obtain CDL Class B license within one (1) year of employment. 

  • Must attend National Playground Safety Institute Playground Safety Inspector Certification Course.

  • Must be computer literate and capable of using the Division’s MainTrac Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).   

  • A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
