GENERAL SUMMARY:
Saginaw Public Schools Coaches are responsible for serving as the head coach for an athletic team, supporting and upholding a philosophy of athletics consistent with that of the SPSD Athletic Department, and organizing and conducting practices, conditioning programs, competitive events and fund-raising events.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the SPSD Athletic Departments philosophy
Knowledge of operating policies, regulations and procedures for SPSD athletics, MHSAA, and other appropriate organizations and conferences
Knowledge of academic requirements for student athletes
Skilled in prioritizing and maintaining a diverse workload, establishing and meeting goals and deadlines, and independently following tasks through to completion
Computer skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to teach sports to individuals and the team as a whole
Ability to effectively motivate team members
Ability to plan and implement program activities and special events
Ability to interact effectively with others in pursuing departmental objectives, including various student groups and campus organizations
Ability to work in a multi-cultural, urban setting and develop a rapport with students, staff, parents and the school community

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organize and conduct practices, conditioning programs and competitive events
Coach must attend and perform coaching duties in all assigned games/contests
Work with Athletic staff to make appropriate arrangements for home games, including set-up, officials, game management, equipment and hospitality for visiting teams
Work with Athletic staff to make appropriate arrangements for away games, including travel rosters, transportation, meals, etc.
Display good sportsmanship in relationship with students, staff, officials and opponents
Instruct with sound principles and expert skills in the specified sport
Follow philosophy of athletics consistent with that of the SPSD Athletic Department
Follow sports rules governing specific sport
Participate in special events to promote the Athletics program
Recruit prospective student athletes to grow the Athletics program
Maintain up-to-date information of sport regulations, rule changes, MSHAA policies
Respond to all appropriate correspondence, email, phone calls, and administrative deadlines
Attend staff meetings
Determine team goals and objectives prior to the start of the season
Maintain current eligibility list and team roster
Ensure the return of equipment and uniforms by athletes, complete inventory at the end of the season
Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve the Athletics program
Assist in Athletic program promotional and marketing projects as needed
Perform other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent
Teaching Certificate preferred
Previous experience working with youth
Previous experience in a coaching position preferred
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
CPR certification preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Outdoor/Indoor environment where there may be physical discomfort due to temperature, dust or the like
Noise level in this environment may be moderate to loud
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise student athletes during practices, games, fund-raising events, etc.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure the return of equipment and uniforms by athletes, complete inventory at the end of the season

None
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
The Building Athletic Director evaluates this position every year. The evaluation form is available from the Human Resources and Labor Relations Department.
All coaches not currently employed by the Saginaw Public School District MUST BE HIRED BY WILLSUB prior to beginning employment with the Saginaw Public School District.
