Director of Development
Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt
The Director of Development designs, leads, and executes the organization’s comprehensive fundraising and institutional relations strategy to ensure short-, medium-, and long-term financial sustainability. This role builds and stewards a robust pipeline of individual, corporate, foundation, and government support, and cultivates a strong culture of philanthropy aligned with our mission, vision, and values.
Key Responsibilities
Lead all fundraising efforts and oversee the development function end-to-end.
Build and manage annual and multi-year development plans (annual fund, memberships/annual giving, planned giving, major gifts, corporate sponsorships) in Puerto Rico, the U.S., and internationally.
Develop and maintain prospect, donor, volunteer, and stakeholder databases; create strategies to identify, qualify, prioritize, solicit, recognize, and steward national and international donors.
Supervise Development staff and manage the division’s budget.
Establish and nurture relationships with foundations and government agencies; lead competitive grant strategy and proposal development in collaboration with program/unit leaders.
Coordinate donor cultivation experiences and executive engagement (e.g., meetings and site visits with the President and Board members); evaluate ROI of cultivation activities.
Recruit and engage advisory/support councils; cultivate high-net-worth donor networks in Puerto Rico.
Track proposal conversion rates; continuously improve systems, protocols, and reporting to maximize ROI and contract compliance.
Seek unrestricted operating support and restricted funding aligned with organizational strategy and priorities.
Design policies, procedures, and reporting/evaluation guidelines for proposals and grants; ensure successful execution of all funded agreements.
Perform other projects and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or related field; Master’s in Nonprofit Management, MBA, Organizational Development, or related field preferred.
7–10+ years of progressive experience in fundraising, institutional development, or philanthropy (nonprofit experience highly valued).
Demonstrated success designing and implementing multi-channel fundraising strategies across individual, corporate, foundation, and government sources.
Proven track record cultivating and managing major gifts and campaigns (capital, legacy/planned giving, or membership programs).
Experience supervising teams and collaborating with executive leadership and boards.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) with excellent written and oral communication in both languages.
Proficiency with productivity tools (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations) and internet research; Mac/Outlook familiarity preferred.
Valid driver’s license.
Work Conditions & Travel
Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends and holidays as needed.
Willingness to travel within and outside Puerto Rico.
Ability to work in the field—including open areas and mountainous terrain—as required.
Preferred Credentials
CFRE certification preferred.
Active membership/participation in professional associations (e.g., AFP).
