About your team

India Tax and Finance team is responsible for controllership of India domestic entities for both FIL and Eight Roads and their respective holding companies based in Mauritius. The team is responsible not only for maintaining books of accounts but for other statutory and regulatory compliances as well including taxation, SEZ, exchange control and other applicable compliances.

Team in recent past years has set up a new capability i.e.  Tax support Centre of Excellence for managing group tax compliances including for Canada based legal entities.

Team’s activity includes:

  • Controllership - Month close activities, Balance Sheet schedules, preparation of year-end financial statements and statutory audit, cross functional projects
  • Tax Support CoE - Managing group tax compliances, VAT return of overseas entities, Country by Country Reporting including Master File, supporting group tax team in Group year end, financial data assimilation for filing tax return across all regions
  • Canada taxation - Managing tax compliances for Canada region
  • Direct and Indirect taxation compliances - Corporate tax, transfer pricing, Goods and Service tax, litigation management
  • Treasury - Liquidity Management, Cash Repatriation, Exchange control compliances, as applicable and payments to vendors and employees
  • Regulatory Compliances - SEZ reporting, Indian Companies House amongst others

About your role
The role will support the Toronto based Corporate Tax team from India. This role will be a valued member of the Canadian Tax team while working in a different geographical location. This role will work closely with members of the Canadian Tax team and Canada Finance. The candidate will develop strong relationships with business partners to meet tax compliance and reporting requirements and will develop a strong working knowledge of the businesses. 

It is an excellent opportunity to gain hands on experience for transformation of various processes within the Tax and Finance function of the firm and its role in firms business. The role will primarily revolve around understanding the current state assessment of various taxation and reporting processes, identifying the transformation opportunities within the same and working with process sponsors and owners to implement the change. The successful applicant will be exposed to multiple facets of taxation as well as reporting processes within Canada tax and would be required to demonstrate flexibility and enthusiasm towards developing an in-depth understanding of the same. 

The right candidate should be able to: 

  • Preparation and filing of monthly HST/GST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and QST (Quebec Sales Tax) returns.
  • Preparation of province-wise excise tax returns and insurance premium tax returns.
  • Preparation and reconciliation of Regulation 105 withholdings and related filings.
  • Preparation and support for other monthly and annual indirect tax returns as applicable.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual SLFI (Specified Listed Financial Institution) returns.
  • Assist in the preparation of Annual Corporate tax returns (T2/ T106).
  • Assist in the annual transfer pricing documentation and other tax compliance responsibilities.
  • Contribute to the preparation and review of tax provisions during quarterly and year-end close processes.
  • Support in tax reserve workings, tax note for financial statements and other tax working papers.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external advisors to gather data and documentation required for compliance and reporting.
  • Ensure proper documentation and maintenance of working papers for audits and internal controls.
  • Support tax team in responding to tax authority queries and audits, as required.
  • Assist in process improvements and automation initiatives related to tax compliance and reporting.
  • Assist in special projects or other ad hoc requests as required.

About you

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Chartered Accountant (CA), CPA, or equivalent qualification preferred. 2-3 years of relevant experience in tax compliance and reporting, preferably for Canada region (Big 4 or corporate tax team experience preferred).
  • Strong understanding of income and indirect taxation and corporate tax laws and regulations, preferably for Canada.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel; Hyperion Smartview; knowledge of ERP systems like Oracle or SAP is a plus.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work in a cross-functional and cross-border team environment.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, communication and presentation skills
  • A motivated and eager to learn attitude
  • Knowledge of TRCS, automation tools, like Power BI, Power Automate would be added advantage
  • Skills to show attention to detail and an appetite to dive into issues in depth as needed
  • Ability to work as part of a team and contribute towards team goals, but equally able to work independently and deliver results
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks against tight deadlines, able to prioritise and organise effectively
  • Ability to grasp new concepts, assimilate information and deliver high quality solutions at speed
