Med/Surg RN - Full Time 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Med-Surg Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients in the Medical-Surgical Unit utilizing the nursing process. This role involves performing patient assessments, administering medications, managing care plans, documentation, critical thinking, and collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure high-quality patient care. The Med-Surg RN plays a critical role in patient recovery, education, and support, while adhering to hospital policies and regulatory standards.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.

License Required:

  • Current Nevada RN license required.

Certificate Required:

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers required.
  • ACLS (may obtain within 90 days of hire).

Minimum Work Experience

  • Previous department specific experience preferred.
  • Professional customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and communicate in English, bilingual abilities preferred.


POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Patient Assessment

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients’ physical, emotional, and psychosocial health, and document findings accurately.
  • Identify patient care needs and develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Monitor patient status and respond to changes in condition, including initiating appropriate interventions.
  • Accurately assesses and documents patient and family needs to provide quality care to assigned patients and ensures integration of information among the multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Demonstrates timely, accurate and complete EHR and/or paper documentation per “Nursing Documentation” policy.
  • Develops patient-centered plan of care based on assessment findings, care goals, and patient input.

Medication Management

  • Administer medications accurately and safely, following the CVH “Ten Rights of Medication Administration” policy.
  • Manage controlled substance medications per policy
  • Maintain an accurate medication administration record (MAR)
  • Utilize barcode scanning for medication administration
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions or side effects and report any issues to the healthcare provider.
  • Educate patients and families on medication purposes, potential side effects, and proper administration.

Communication

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to provide clear and accurate information about patient care and treatment plans.
  • Participate in bedside shift handoffs, interdisciplinary meetings, and care coordination to ensure continuity of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns with professionalism, empathy, and timely responses. Seek assistance from more experienced staff as needed.  

Documentation

  • Accurately and timely document all patient care activities, assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensure documentation meets hospital standards and regulatory requirements, and reflects the care provided.

Clinical Resource

  • Actively seek guidance and mentorship from experienced nurses and other healthcare professionals to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training opportunities to stay current with best practices and evidence-based care.
  • Utilize available resources, including policies, procedures, and clinical tools, to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Stay current with best practices, clinical guidelines, and continuing education opportunities. 

Judgment

  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement nursing plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used medications: action, dose, and side effects.
  • Observes the rights of medication administration. 
  • Demonstrates proper procedures in all methods of medication administration.
  • Administers blood and blood products following hospital policy and procedures.
  • Initiates and maintains IV access according to hospital policy and procedures.
  • Assesses and documents IV site per unit standard.
  • Uses critical thinking and efficient time management. 

Scope of Service

  • Performs consistent, purposeful hourly rounding
  • Provide nursing care to a diverse patient population, including those with acute, chronic, and complex medical conditions. 
  • Assesses, evaluates, and carries out nursing interventions and teaching as applicable for med-surg and swing bed patients.
  • Work within the scope of nursing practice as defined by state laws, hospital policies, and professional standards.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of patient care services through participation in quality improvement initiatives. 
  • Demonstrates skill and knowledge in nursing management of emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in using equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of setting up and maintaining sterile field for minor sterile procedures such as insertion of central lines, chest tubes, etc.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current policies and procedures pertaining to vaccination of patients and the documentation of teaching done.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in specific areas of clinical experience, as applicable.
