ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking an R&D Site Manager to oversee our operations in Huelva, Spain - a key location for the development and evaluation of citrus and subtropical fruit varieties. This is a unique, high-impact opportunity to lead day-to-day farm operations while also managing broader site infrastructure and compliance. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with deep agricultural experience, strong organizational skills, and a passion for continuous improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Crop & Farm Management

  • Plan and oversee all farming activities related to citrus and subtropical crops (e.g., irrigation, pruning, fertilization, pest and disease management, harvesting).
  • Monitor plant health and ensure optimal productivity through timely and precise farm operations.
  • Apply digital tools and data-driven insights to inform decisions and track crop performance.
  • Oversee pest and disease control, herbicide applications, and orchard maintenance in compliance with regulatory      standards and best practices.
  • Manage infrastructure related to irrigation systems, greenhouses, and quarantine facilities.
  • Identify challenges in the field and implement timely, cost-effective solutions to maintain quality standards.
  • Stay up to date on advancements in horticulture and integrate innovations into operations.

Equipment, Infrastructure & Safety

  • Ensure all farm and site equipment is operational, maintained, and used safely and efficiently.
  • Develop and implement site-wide safety protocols, training programs, and compliance procedures.
  • Oversee infrastructure projects including fencing, erosion control, facility improvements, and equipment upgrades.
  • Maintain all documentation and records related to pesticide use, safety audits, and regulatory compliance.

Strategic Site Leadership

  • Serve as the site lead, overseeing all aspects of site performance including compliance, safety, budgeting, and      infrastructure operations.
  • Manage regulatory documentation and reporting, ensuring full compliance with local and international standards.
  • Oversee the operation and integrity of quarantine facilities, maintaining freedom-to-operate status and adherence to all regulatory requirements.
  • Lead site evolution planning, including the relocation or reconfiguration of trees, vines, and infrastructure to support long-term R&D goals.
  • Identify and implement operational improvements, using data, technology, and cross-functional input to drive efficiency and innovation.
  • Collaborate with global teams to ensure alignment with company-wide strategies and contribute to cross-regional      knowledge sharing.

People & Culture Leadership

  • Inspire and lead a diverse team of full-time, seasonal, and contract employees, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous learning.
  • Champion change by encouraging innovation, supporting new ideas, and helping staff adapt to evolving priorities and practices.
  • Plan and schedule labor needs in alignment with agronomic and strategic priorities.
  • Provide clear direction, regular feedback, and performance evaluations to ensure team success and professional growth.
  • Build strong relationships with local staff and stakeholders, serving as a trusted leader and advocate for the site’s mission and values.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, agronomy, agricultural engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years managing farm operations, especially citrus or subtropical crops.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with responsibility for teams and site operations.
  • Strong decision-making skills, with the      ability to troubleshoot and resolve operational challenges.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to      operate farm equipment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and      interpersonal skills.

Preferred

  • 10+ years managing farm operations. 
  • Proficiency in digital tools for data collection and farm management.
  • Working knowledge of greenhouse, irrigation, and quarantine systems.
  • Experience managing facilities or operations that include both field and controlled environments.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for international plant quarantine and R&D operations.
  • Fluent in Spanish and proficient in English (written and spoken).
