About the Department
In this entry level position, you will support the office needs for the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) Wildfire Mitigation Section and perform semi-skilled operations as needed. The CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section offers various programs centered around wildfire risk reduction focusing on education, outreach, neighborhood chipping and hazardous fuels reduction projects. In this position, your primary role will be to perform tasks to assist with education and outreach. This position will educate the community through various methods to empower citizens to complete wildfire mitigation work. These methods include conducting onsite consultations with homeowners at their property, and homeowners associations, conducting cost share stipends with homeowners and contractors, performing wildfire risk assessments, and assisting with and presenting at public meetings that typically occur after hours on weeknights and weekends.
Schedule:Early May - early November: 4 10-hour days (Monday - Thursday)
Early November - end of April: 5 8-hour days (Monday - Friday)

Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
- Conduct onsite consultation and provide wildfire risk reduction recommendations to homeowners and HOAs/neighborhoods in the city of Colorado Springs
- Conduct cost share stipend consultations and assist with tracking cost share stipends for grant tracking and reporting
- Answer phones and emails and address individual requests, appointments, questions, or complaints in a timely manner
- Manage wildfire risk assessment map to include updating risk assessments, data collection, data entry and progress tracking
- Maintain records, and prepare reports as needed for the CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section
- Conduct media interviews as needed
- Represent the CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section on committees and at workshops as needed
- Assist with the submission of Firewise USA applications
- Conduct vegetation management inspections in the wildland urban interface as needed
- Prepare and conduct wildfire risk reduction presentations in various meeting forums
- Manage fuel moisture monitoring by collecting samples, calculating moisture percentages, and tracking and reporting data
- Perform clerical duties, tracking, and logistic support in an office setting
- Register residents for various CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section programs
- Provide courteous service and assistance to City residents
- As needed, assist the program with hazardous fuels reduction projects by thinning brush, chipping woody debris, removing biomass, marking removal trees, flagging project boundaries, making maps ,and collecting data
- As needed, safely operate and maintain high powered and specialized equipment, including dump trucks, woodchippers, chainsaws, power tools (i.e. brush cutters, leaf blowers, mowers), and hand tools
- As needed, assist with training Wildfire Mitigation Section staff on high powered and specialized equipment

Position Duties
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED) and additional specialized training in mitigation, natural resource management, forestry, disaster risk reduction, emergency management, public safety education, or related field
- Five (5) years of full-time professional experience in mitigation, natural resource management, forestry, disaster risk reduction, emergency management, public safety education, or related field
- Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Minimum Qualifications

- Six (6) months of direct supervisory experience
- National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type II certification and Red Card
- National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) Wildland Fire Chainsaw Certification
- Microsoft Office Suite experience

This position requires working in both an office setting and outside around moving vehicles and heavy equipment.Physical Demands: The ability to lift, carry, and drag up to 50 pounds frequently, distinguish colors, pull, reach, bend, climb, and kneel for extended periods is required.
