In order to participate in Berklee Student Employment, a student must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program. Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters.

  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN).

  • Remain in “valid” Visa status as applicable.

  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester.

  • Federal Work Study student may apply.

  • In good disciplinary standing.

  • Must be located in the U.S.

The Supertitles Coordinator will collaborate closely with stage directors, music staff, and production teams in the Vocal Arts Department to develop, design, and operate supertitles for both staged and concert productions throughout the year. This role involves working from piano-vocal scores in multiple languages, crafting clear and readable text that aligns precisely with musical timing and dramatic action. The ideal candidate will possess strong musical literacy, being able to follow complex vocal and orchestral cues, as well as strong command of linguistics and translation of operatic libretti. In rehearsal and performance settings, the Coordinator will attend technical rehearsals, refine the timing and
placement of titles, and run the projection system live during performances. This position requires excellent attention to detail, responsiveness to changes in staging or cuts, and the ability to work collaboratively with artistic and production colleagues to ensure a seamless audience experience.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interface with the stage director of each production to get the titles that are being used and input them in the appropriate format for projection (Keynote).
  • Assemble the calling score for the opera, i.e. mark the score with the location of where each title should be seen.
  • Rehearse with running the titles. Operator will be present at the final run through in the rehearsal room, the sitzprobe, piano dress rehearsal, all orchestra dress rehearsals, and all performances.
  • Take notes/make corrections as changes arise in the final production process and update the calling score as needed.
  • Careful proofing of supertitles for accuracy.
  • Careful tracking/reporting of hours worked

Qualifications and Skills

  • The supertitle coordinator/operator must be able to follow an opera piano/vocal score of each production to accurately call the titles. Some of the music is difficult and the text is in a variety of languages.
  • Facility with various computer programs, e.g. Word, PowerPoint/Keynote
  • Good communication and organizational skills, the ability to follow instructions, great attention to detail, reliability, promptness.
  • A willingness to work within the department and an attitude that is conducive to an overall positive working environment
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, reliability, promptness, and careful proofing of any work they produce.

NOTE: If the Supertitle Coordinator is cast in any given opera, arrangements will be made to have another operator for the performances being given by the coordinator.

HOURS NOTE: there will be approximately 90 hours of work over the course of the academic year. However, the hours are not weekly, but rather, by the needs of the specific productions. There are a minimum of three operas that BCB Opera produces each year that will need supertitles. Each production will require about 30 hours of work.

Salary Grade: Student Worker 3, $17.00/hr
