JOB PURPOSE:

The Archivist processes archival records using standard archival procedures and policies of arranging, describing and preserving official university records. The incumbent answers reference questions from the Howard University community and external historians, scholars, and researchers.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

Responsible for supervising the work of student employees and volunteers in processing and reference duties.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts include the Howard University community of faculty, staff, and students, as well as researchers, visiting scholars, and other patrons of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Evaluates, sorts, arranges, describes, and implements preservation measures of archival records.
  • Prepares reference, retrieval, and storage tools relating to archival records
  • Assists in the accessioning of archival records as directed by the University Archivist.
  • Coordinates and reviews the work of technical/clerical staff, student employees, and volunteers.
  • Provides reference and research assistance in the use of archival records
  • Assists in the establishment, development, and maintenance of a records management and document analysis program.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by the University Archivist, to include identifying and preparing archival material for digitization as well as curating exhibits in the Howard University Museum
  • Engages in professional development and continuing education activities

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of archival theories and practices.
  • Ability to recognize, understand, and interpret archival concepts, principles, and standard practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and relationships with supervisors, co-workers, faculty, staff, students, donors, researchers, university officials, and the public.
  • Mature judgment and the ability to prioritize and adapt to numerous duties.
  • Handles, lifts, and moves records (boxed and unboxed) as necessary to support the operation of the position.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate degree in a humanities or social science field, preferably History, from an accredited institution, OR master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution in Library and Information Science with a concentration in archives and/or records management. At least three (3) years of professional archival experience. Demonstrated ability and initiative in reference, instruction, and outreach.

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

$70,000-80,000 Annually
