Brown Advisory is currently seeking a professional, energetic and detail-oriented individual to fill a Private Client Tax Associate role within our Baltimore or Washington DC office location. The ideal candidate should possess the professional maturity to handle confidential and delicate client information. This position requires a careful individual with a high level of initiative and experience with income tax matters relating to family offices, investment partnerships, trusts and high net worth individuals and families. A candidate’s exceptional written and oral communication skills will allow them to succeed in working with a broad internal team of CPAs, tax attorneys and investment advisors on behalf of sophisticated families and their trusts in order to facilitate complex tax reporting and planning projects in coordination with large outside accounting firms. The Private Client Tax Associate reports to the Fiduciary Tax Manager.
The primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Organize and evaluate tax return data for trusts and private foundations.
- Facilitate the timely filing of trust and foundation tax returns with collaboration with a big four accounting firm and execution of tax payments on the client’s behalf.
- Effectively communicate and coordinate with outside tax accountants to review and analyze federal and state fiduciary tax and informational returns for non-grantor trusts, private foundations, supporting organizations and charitable split-interest trusts.
- Communicate with CPAs and attorneys to analyze and answer questions concerning partnership K-1s, trust beneficiary K-1s and grantor tax letters.
- Maintain correspondence with the IRS and various state taxing authorities.
- Coordinate and communicate with private client relationship advisors, strategic advisors, portfolio managers and outside custodians to achieve optimal reporting and client service.
- Recommend tax efficient strategies by researching federal, state, and local taxation issues.
- Provide additional expertise in the review, interpretation, and implementation of new or revised tax laws and be able to explain tax law and implications to others.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
- Research and complete special projects as they arise – be able to think creatively and strategically.
Qualifications:
- Three to five (3-5) years of tax experience in public accounting, a family office or with a financial institution’s private client business.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or another related program.
- Advanced degree (law or master’s in taxation) or enrollment in an advanced degree program highly desired.
- CPA license or significant progress towards licensure (2+ passed sections of the CPA Exam) required.
- Prior experience with partnership tax accounting, private equity and investment partnerships.
- Prior experience with Thomson Reuters OneSource Trust Tax
- Experience analyzing and researching partnership operating agreements.
- Familiarity with reviewing and researching trust instruments a plus.
- Strong accounting and analytical skills.
- Proficiency with tax research.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in an office location.
MD Salary Range: $85-$90k. Commensurate with experience and location. Does not include bonus or long term incentive eligibility (if applicable).
DC Salary Range: $93-$98k. Commensurate with experience and location. Does not include bonus or long term incentive eligibility (if applicable).
