The Process Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) position is an exciting opportunity to join PM Group’s quickly growing Boston area team out of Burlington, MA. Together we are sharing knowledge, learning, growing, and continuing to be an integral part of supporting PM Group’s ongoing expansion in the US. Our office is executing cutting-edge projects for Pharmaceutical, Biologics and Cell & Gene Therapy, manufacturing facilities – from feasibility through to qualification – for both local and international clients. This is where the Senior Process Safety SME comes in. We’re seeking an experienced Senior Process Safety SME with broad process design experience to join our USA team. This role supports both domestic operations and global Business Units across PM Group.
The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic project environment that involves a wide variety of hazard types. This role provides support across both multidisciplinary engineering teams and our dedicated Process Safety Consulting Services.

:- Independently lead and plan process safety activities across various project design stages
- Serve as the primary process safety contact, coordinating with client representatives, equipment vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to gather information and resolve safety-related issues
- Deliver a range of process safety deliverables, such as:
- Hazardous (Classified) Locations / Electrical Classification assessments
- Process Safety Management (PSM) Plans
- Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA)
- Consequence modeling (e.g., toxic dispersion, fire, explosion); familiarity with DNV-Phast software is a plus
- Pressure Relief Device (PRD) / Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) sizing calculations
- Asphyxiation risk assessments
- Project Basis of Safety (BoS) documentation
- Safety shower evaluations
- Prepare / contribute to code compliance documentation, particularly regarding hazardous materials in process buildings, aligned with state and federal regulations, ICC, and NFPA standards
- Provide input during loss prevention discussions with clients and clients’ insurers such as FM Global
- Support projects across a diverse range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, specialty chemicals, advanced manufacturing, energy, and waste recycling
- Office based hybrid work model with site-based surveys and safety studies where required
- Collaborate directly with clients, vendors, and engineering colleagues to resolve process safety challenges
- Assist in expanding Process Safety services in the U.S. by identifying and supporting business development opportunities with new and existing clients
- Special projects as needed
- 10+ Years' of relevant experience in a similar role, with strong expertise in process safety and process design within the life sciences industry
- Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
- Professional Engineering (PE) license is desirable; candidates actively pursuing licensure are also encouraged to apply
- Hybrid work model and employees are expected to be in the office, on average, 3 days a week, with site visits for surveys and safety studies as needed
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills—both written and verbal—are essential for success in this role
- Highly self-motivated, organized, and dependable, with a professional demeanour and the ability to work independently
- Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and prioritizing tasks effectively
- Strong team orientation and enthusiasm for collaborative work
- Flexible and adaptable to meet evolving project demands and dynamic work environments
- Demonstrated expertise in key process safety areas such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), hazardous location classification, Process Safety Management (PSM), and pressure relief device (PRD) sizing, etc.
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. health and safety regulations, codes of practice, and industry standards
- Hands-on experience in process design, including development and maintenance of PFDs, P&IDs, equipment sizing, and process calculation
- Familiarity with client-specific standards and regulatory frameworks from both the U.S. and Europe is a plus
