Responsible for the implementation and execution of the Mental Health Plan in the assigned region based on MSD School Safety Act of 2018. This role serves a group of schools in a geographic location requiring travel and ongoing coordination among school sites. Familiarity of at-risk behaviors, individual and group counseling, drug and alcohol counseling, and community resources tailored to youth is a requirement for this role. The Mental Health Counselor will work closely with the principal, school guidance counselors, and district representatives to ensure seamless integration of services, effective communication, and documentation as it relates to providing mental health services and resources to students.
Responsibilities of Area Director
- Works with the Senior VP of Organizational Development to implement the Mental Health Plan.
- Coordinate services through the school principal.
- Develop and implement a referral process as part of the identification of students based on a standardized procedure.
- Identify and implement an early warning system to assist schools in identifying students in need of mental health services.
- Develop a student case management (SCM) process to document services provided to students.
- Utilize a multi-tiered intervention system to prioritize the nature of services provided to students.
- Collaborate with school and community resources to expand services for students.
- Develop a process, including legal agreements, for interacting with family physicians when necessary.
- Develop/implement documentation process and communication with parents.
- Identify/implement a research based assessment that incorporates mental health as well as drug/alcohol risks.
- Establish/coordinate with the schools crisis intervention team to assist schools in addressing the mental health needs of students
- Should be well versed in the following and other related laws: in Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA)
- Develop pre, ongoing, and post treatment and recovery plans.

Additional Responsibilities:
Work independently and exercise sound judgment within established guidelines; collect, evaluate and interpret varied data; use word processing, graphics, spreadsheet and database programs to develop reports, databases and communications materials; compose correspondence; coordinate multiple projects and meet critical deadlines; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Employees must be able to relate to other people beyond giving and receiving of instructions: (a) can get along with co-workers or peers without exhibiting behavioral extremes and (b) respond appropriately to criticism from a supervisor.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in school counseling or comparable
Certified School Counselor, School Psychologist, or Social Worker and/or licensed Mental Health Professional
A minimum of three to five years related experience
Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office
Organized, energetic, innovative and professional
Excellent interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written English communication skills
