Overview:

The Radiation Therapy Intern provides patient support by helping to prepare treatment rooms, position patients, maintain equipment, and assist with daily procedures for cancer patients receiving radiation therapy under the guidance of the Radiation Therapist and Radiation Oncologist.


This position demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Mission, Vision and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.

Responsibilities:

- Guiding patients to and from treatment rooms, helping them transfer to the treatment machine, and ensuring their comfort.
- Schedules patients for outpatient appointments.
- Preparing treatment rooms, making sure the equipment is properly warmed up, and checking laser positioning for accurate patient alignment.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and readiness of treatment machines and other equipment. Assist with monitoring equipment operations and reporting of any malfunctions or peculiarities to the manager and/or radiation physicist to ensure proper function prior to treatment of patients.
- Supporting radiation therapists and other medical professionals in various tasks to ensure the efficient flow of patients.
- Completes proper documentation in the patient treatment record according to procedure which is consistent with an environment of safety and good communication
- Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback.
- Maintains compliance with State and HFAP/ACR requirements in regard to radiation safety and protection for patients and staff.
- Attend scheduled in-services to review policy/procedure and safety measures.
- Follows hospital dress code and wears appropriate monitoring device to detect personnel exposure.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Must be actively enrolled and attending a graduate program from an accredited Radiation Therapy School.
- Become BLS-CPR certified within six (6) months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Must possess knowledge of a variety of treatment modalities including experience with Linear Accelerators and Simulators.
- Excellent understanding of proper use of electronic medical record.
- Effectively operates a computer using MS Office applications such as Word, Excel.
- Excellent understanding of proper billing practices and is able to use site specific office management system for scheduling and billing.
- Excellent verbal and writing communication skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with others in person and on the telephone.
