JOB SUMMARY
The Controller will provide hands-on accounting, leadership, administrative support and maintain strong financial reporting controls within the dealership. This position will operate the accounting department, maintain good employee relationships, and conduct ongoing training and development of the accounting staff. The Controller is also responsible for setting and obtaining objectives set by the dealership.
QUALIFICATIONS (minimum requirements)
Education and/or years’ experience required:
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or business administration.
- Two to three years’ management experience.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred/Required Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to lead, mentor, and direct staff.
Supervision of others/decision making aptitude (if applicable):
- Supervision responsibilities are required with this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- The Controller will prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP and corporate accounting policies and procedures.
- Month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliation of all income, expense, and balance sheet accounts to ensure completeness and accuracy of financial data.
- Prepare and submit monthly financial statements in compliance with dealership and manufacturer guidelines by the 4th business day.
- File sales and use taxes for North Dakota and Minnesota.
- Monitor working capital and cash flow.
- Post manufacturer ACH’s (rebates, misc. credits).
- Manage the day-to-day accounting operations of the dealership.
- Assist and direct staff on tasks and assignments.
- Develop and maintain effective cash management system and keep the General Manager informed on accounting trends.
- Perform timely month-end closings and submission of financial statements.
- Manage and safeguard assets and ensure proper financial reporting controls.
- Work with staff and dealership management to improve revenue or reduce expenses.
- Oversee collections activities to maintain timely customer payments.
- Manage the general ledger, review monthly journal entries, and ensure proper documentation and compliance with GAAP.
- Bank reconciliations, reserve accounts, and floor plan payables.
- Process and review bi-weekly payroll using UKG.
- Supervise daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions.
- Annual audit preparation, coordinating deliverables with external auditors.
- Annual inventory counts and reconciles general ledger accounts to match inventory valuations.
- Maintain effective communication across all dealership departments to support operational and financial alignment.
- Backup daily accounting operations, when needed.
- Answer phones.
- Scan all documents into document repository system.
- Process employee car deals.
- Oversee the body shop financials and reports.
- Pull daily, weekly and monthly manufacturer invoices
- Ensure compliance with dealership policies and standard operational procedures.
- Adhere to work schedule and maintain regular attendance.
