This Opportunity
Bay West is seeking a dedicated, part-time, Environmental Technician to support the operation and maintenance of groundwater treatment systems at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. This hands-on role offers the chance to contribute to critical environmental remediation efforts while gaining practical experience in system operations and data collection.
This is an on-site position based in Sumter, South Carolina. Candidates must reside within Sumter or no more than one hour from the worksite. Candidates must be available to work 20 hours per week, additional hours may be available based on the project needs.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Perform onsite operation and maintenance of groundwater treatment plants located at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina under the direction of local groundwater treatment plant operators.
- Conduct routine inspections including recording system operational data, flow and pressure readings, visual observations, and other observations as needed.
- Conduct routine record keeping and assimilation of data.
- Troubleshoot and fix problems associated with the operation of the groundwater treatment plants.
- Collect permit-related samples from the groundwater treatment plants and prepare the samples for shipment to a laboratory for analysis.
- Oversee and direct subcontractors.
- Communicate with project team, provide updates on work performed, and issues encountered.
- Conduct work safely in accordance with project safety plans and provided training.
- Order supplies and equipment required to operate the groundwater treatment plant.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- 0 to 3 years of experience in environmental field technician role
- Valid driver’s license with clear motor vehicle record
- 40-hour HAZWOPER or ability to obtain one in 30 days
- Able to obtain site access to secure areas such as Federal sites
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and analytical skills
- Willingness to travel to Shaw AFB up to 3-5 days per week
- Mechanically inclined and familiar with hand tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with operations and maintenance of wastewater or groundwater treatment facilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to function in work environments that sometimes include high heat; high humidity; extreme cold; roadway traffic hazards; on water (boat operations) and confined spaces.
- Adequate vision and hearing to safely see teammates hand signals and hear warning communication in low light.
- Substantial repetitive movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers (including reaching, grasping, twisting, pushing, and pulling).
- Walking on uneven surfaces & climbing stairs/ladders.
- Semi-frequent crouching, bending, stooping and twisting, occasionally in tight spaces.
- Sitting in a vehicle for up to eleven hours straight.
- Working while standing during a 12-hour workday.
- Frequently lifting up to 10 lbs. over an 8-hour period and occasionally up to 50 lbs. over a four-hour period.
- Occasionally lifting 3-6” diameter hoses that weigh approximately 20 pounds over the head onto hose racks.
- Managing a 55-gallon drum containing approximately 400 pounds of material onto a drum dolly, then moving the drum using the dolly.
