About the Department
Are you a passionate and experienced urban planning professional ready to make a tangible impact? The City of Milwaukie is seeking a skilled Associate Planner to contribute to the current and long-range planning of our vibrant community. This mid-level professional role involves performing a variety of technical and professional work, developing land use policies, and implementing regulations.
You will play a key role in ensuring development aligns with our established plans and ordinances, serving as a critical resource for developers, the business community, and the public. This position offers an exciting mix of development review, long-range planning, and public engagement.
Position Duties
What You'll Do
In this role, you will be performing core planning functions that directly contribute to the city's growth and values, including our focus on accountability, accessibility, efficiency, collaboration, and equity.
Development Review: Evaluate complex land use applications and site plans for compliance, prepare findings, and provide recommendations. You'll also serve as a rotating planner on duty, assisting the public with planning-related questions at the counter, via email, and by phone.
Long-Range Planning: Analyze issues, develop policy proposals, and update the City's Comprehensive Plan and Municipal Code. You will coordinate public outreach and facilitate presentations to the public and agency stakeholders.
Communication and Collaboration: Deliver technical advice and presentations to the City Council, boards, commissions, and the general public. You will also prepare public information materials and coordinate with other city departments and agencies.
Sustainability and Equity: Contribute to the delivery of the City's climate action and sustainability goals and reflect the City's values in all work activities.
Minimum Qualifications
What You'll Bring
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in urban or regional planning, public administration, or a closely related field is required.
Experience: Requires at least 3 years of experience using technical skills such as interpreting code, preparing and presenting reports, assisting community members, and developing maps using GIS data.
Note: Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
