Oberlin City Schools – Coaching & Advising Positions
Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to organize and supervise a comprehensive athletic or activity program.
Previous successful coaching or advising experience in the assigned area preferred (for major sports or equivalent programs).
Comprehensive knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport or activity, with a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
Serves as a positive role model for students through actions, leadership, and instruction.
Reports To:
Athletic Director (for athletic programs) and/or the Building Principal
Job Goal:
To instruct and guide students in the fundamental skills, strategies, and training necessary for individual and team success, while modeling and promoting traits such as responsibility, respect, self-discipline, and sportsmanship. The coach/advisor is expected to maintain and enhance professional knowledge through clinics, workshops, and collaboration with peers.
General Overview:
The success and visibility of extracurricular programs reflect upon the entire school district. Coaches and advisors carry a significant responsibility to balance the pursuit of excellence with the development of character, integrity, and emotional well-being in all student participants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Program and Compliance:
Understands and enforces all athletic and district policies as approved by the Oberlin City Schools Board of Education.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of district, league, and state regulations and ensures consistent application across the program.
Follows the proper administrative chain of command and communicates effectively with supervisors and staff.
Staff Leadership:
Establishes and communicates program philosophy, skills, and expectations to all assistants and volunteers.
Encourages professional growth and provides opportunities for staff development.
Delegates responsibilities appropriately, supervises performance, and provides feedback and evaluation at season’s end.
Promotes cooperation, morale, and effective communication within the coaching/advising staff.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Assists in scheduling, transportation, and facility arrangements for practices and events.
Ensures all eligibility, physical, and parental consent forms are properly collected and maintained.
Oversees the security and maintenance of all program equipment and facilities.
Submits required reports, inventories, and recommendations to the Athletic Director or Principal as needed.
Student Development:
Serves as a mentor and role model for all participants.
Monitors student academic performance and behavior, reinforcing expectations for conduct and sportsmanship.
Enforces training rules and disciplinary procedures consistently and fairly, communicating with parents as necessary.
Promotes athlete/advisor safety by implementing and following emergency procedures and injury protocols.
Budget and Equipment Management:
Assists in preparing budget requests and operates within approved allocations.
Maintains accurate inventory of all equipment and ensures proper care, return, and storage.
Promotes respect for school property and facilities among all participants.
Public Relations:
Builds positive relationships with parents, community members, and media.
Promotes the program within the district and community through appropriate communication and outreach.
Represents Oberlin City Schools with professionalism, integrity, and respect at all times.
Additional Requirements:
Must hold a valid Pupil Activity Permit (for athletic positions) as required by the Ohio Department of Education.
Must complete Coaches' Tool Chest Certification and background check clearances prior to employment.
