Senior Underwriter presso Tangram Insurance Services

Job Summary:

The Senior Underwriter plays a critical role in balancing growth, profitability, and risk discipline across their assigned program. This individual combines deep technical expertise with strong relationship management skills to evaluate, price, and manage business in alignment with our company’s underwriting philosophy and carrier expectations.

As a senior member of the underwriting team, this role is both strategic and hands-on, responsible for managing a profitable book of business, developing broker partnerships, and contributing to the ongoing evolution of our products, processes, and people.

Responsibilities:

Underwriting & Portfolio Management

• Evaluate, price, and underwrite new and renewal business within delegated authority, ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines and carrier appetite.
• Analyze risk exposures, loss trends, and portfolio data to make informed, data-driven decisions.
• Recommend appropriate pricing, coverage structures, and terms that support profitability and sustainable growth.
• Manage a defined book of business, proactively monitoring results and taking corrective action where necessary.
• Partner with actuarial, claims, and operations teams to refine strategy, ensure data integrity, and maintain underwriting discipline.

Broker & Client Relationships

• Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with appointed brokers and agents to drive production and retention.
• Communicate clearly around underwriting appetite, submission requirements, and program goals.
• Present as a knowledgeable and credible market presence, engaging in meetings, industry events, and client discussions as needed.
• Collaborate with brokers to deliver creative, compliant solutions that balance the insured’s needs and program objectives.

Program & Product Development

• Provide feedback and insight on underwriting guidelines, pricing models, and program strategy based on field experience and market conditions.
• Identify opportunities for new coverages, endorsements, or product enhancements that strengthen competitiveness and alignment with carrier expectations.
• Partner with analytics and operations teams to improve workflows, tools, and system efficiency.

Leadership & Mentorship

• Serve as a technical resource and mentor for underwriters, associates, and support staff.
• Contribute to training, process improvement, and cross-team collaboration.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience required.
• 7–10 years of commercial underwriting experience with an MGA, carrier, or program administrator.
• Expertise in specific line of business – crisis management, product recall and contamination.
• Demonstrated history of disciplined underwriting and profitable portfolio management.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and apply data insights.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment that values accountability and autonomy.
• Proficiency in underwriting systems, rating tools, and Microsoft Office suite.

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $160,000. The offer will depend on the geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors. This role may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program.
