The Mainframe & Data Center Infrastructure organization engineers, operates, and supports highly available and scalable infrastructures at Amex, which includes mainframe application services, middleware systems, database operations, data centers and security services.
How will you make an impact in this role?
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer I for Application Services is a Hybrid role supporting Mainframe developers and tooling including components such as Control-M suite of tools used in Batch Orchestration (Control-M, Workload Change Manager, Insights, Archive, Airflow), CI/CD Pipeline modernization (ISPW, Topaz, VSCode, GIT, Code Coverage, Automated Test), along with re-usable utilities developing customer centric self- service capabilities. The role will report directly to the Director of Engineering for Application Services.
Responsibilities
- Partner with business and vendor teams to analyze objectives, evaluate application architecture, and identify, diagnose, and resolve complex challenges.
- Collaborate with Infrastructure and Application Engineers and Architects to demonstrate modern technologies such as API enablement (e.g., z/OS Connect), containerization, DevOps, AI/ML integration, cloud-native development, and hybrid cloud architectures blending mainframe and cloud services.
- Drive engineering leadership and own delivery execution, including hands-on CI/CD implementation using tools like GitHub, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and SonarQube.
- Champion software and code quality by enforcing engineering-first practices—code reviews, adopting Generative AI developer tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot), and advancing code modernization initiatives.
- Lead architecture and engineering discussions, design new systems, and re-engineer existing ones to align with evolving product and business needs.
- Initiate and contribute to brainstorming and discovery sessions to evaluate emerging technologies through research, proofs of concept, and independent exploration.
- Apply deep expertise to remove blockers during production incidents, degraded performance periods, and solution rollouts, ensuring timely recovery and delivery.
- Enforce compliance with engineering, architectural, regulatory, and strategic standards, policies, and procedures.
- Accelerate modernization of platforms and applications by applying agile and DevOps methodologies.
Please note, salary increases in case of a lateral move are provided only on an exception basis and in line with compensation guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 8+ years of engineering experience within complex mainframe environments in the Financial Services industry.
- 5+ years experience in designing, architecting, and implementing mainframe and distributed applications.
- Demonstrated expertise in application development and deployment architectures, including automated testing and security scanning.
- Bachelors Degree
Advanced proficiency in modern mainframe technologies and languages such as zOSMF, ZOWE, zOAU, Ansible, Python, and Java.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Practical experience with core mainframe tools, languages, and platforms (e.g., COBOL, REXX, CICS, DB2, IMS, JCL).
- Skilled in complex problem-solving, data analysis, reporting, and executive-level presentations.
- Strong knowledge of emerging technologies and their relevance to the American Express technology ecosystem.
- Proven critical thinking, sound decision-making, integrity, and collaboration across teams and functions.
- Exceptional ability to motivate, guide, and inspire teams to meet and exceed commitments.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt messaging to diverse audiences.
