Position Summary
The Lumber Grader is responsible for evaluating and providing consistent and accurate grading of surfaced, kiln-dried, and green-in lumber in a high-production manufacturing operation. This role ensures that all products meet the company’s quality standards and specifications for structural and aesthetic uses.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Grades lumber based on NHLA and proprietary grading standards.
- Must know how to grade Kiln Dry and “Green in” Lumber, all species to NHLA standards.
- Examine lumber on chain conveyors or racks for defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, and defective milling.
- Grades lumber to ensure specified dimensions.
- Tallies pieces of lumber according to grade and board footage.
- Removes unsatisfactory pieces from the conveyor or table and places pieces on stacks, in bins, or on carts.
- Scales board footage and records results.
- Pulls graded lumber into unit form.
- Communicate with kiln operators, machine operators, and lumber stackers to ensure a consistent flow of quality lumber.
- Ability to extract the maximum value out of all species and grades.
- Assist with the implementation of new grades or product changes.
- Assist in quarterly product reviews with level I and II Lumber graders.
- Maintain a 95% or better grade average
- Collaborate with Operators on discrepancies and defects.
- Reviews product carts for grade opportunities or missed piled boards.
- Assist with the training of level I and II graders.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in lumber grading or a related field.
- Knowledge of grading standards such as those set by the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) or similar organizations.
- NHLA certification is preferred.
- Willingness to learn the NWH Proprietary Grading System

- Must be able to work any shift -- overtime, weekends, holidays as required, and in all conditions.
- Capable of completing the required documentation.
- Able to work as a team, get along with team members, give and take advice and criticism from other team members.
- Crosstrain in other production-related jobs.
Physical Requirements
- While performing the duties of this job, the team member is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.
- The team member must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the team member is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and outside weather conditions.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
- This job may require the following equipment when in the field: eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, safety shoes, sleeve protection, safety vest, and a hard hat.
